This is the start of the daily #Covid19 thread for Tuesday.
So despite big increases in cases and hospitalisations, no further restrictions for #England. How bad will the data be today? We'll find out later and I'll update and analyse all the data worldwide as often as possible:
Boris has urged you all to be cautious in the packed bars and nightclubs on New Year's Eve, so that's ok then!
#Norway updates all its data: it's not as good as it seemed last week #Covid19 cases are still falling: 3,750 new infections today, but down only 291 on a week ago.
However testing remains lower and the last 2 days have seen the 2 highest positive test rates ever: 23.6% + 19.4%
#Covid19 cases in #China slightly up again as officials try to stop the outbreak.
209 new infections, with 175 in the new epicentre of Xi'an
Over 6k infections in #NSW where the positive test rate is up to a record high 6.5%
The hospital at the centre of the wrong test results scandal admits another 486 positive cases were told they were negative.
7 European countries are at all time high #Covid19 infection rates; others set to join soon.
Very likely still some Christmas lag in today's figure but 737 new #Covid19 infections.
That takes the 7-day rate to 918 AD/M
Big record for #Malta as well - the country's 4th in 8 days.
1,299 new #Covid19 cases - the first time ever the island has hit 1000. That's 237% above last Tuesday.
Doubling time is 4.8 days
Two more Balkan countries showing #Covid19 rises today but I suspect both are Christmas related lag rather than "genuine" rises just yet #Croatia doubles cases to 4,139 but infection rate still below Christmas day
1,144 new infections in #Romania which is nearer to a turn upwards
After bad data the last two days, #Denmark's cases fall again today.
12,330 positive #Covid19 tests in the last 24 hours, down over 700 on a week ago, or 5.6%.
The positive test rate is 3.9%
#UAE once again quadruple #Covid19 cases today.
1,846 positive tests confirmed, up from 452.
One death. 3.5 days doubling time.
* BREAKING *
Now the EXCLUSIVE health data for the #UK today
Number of #Covid19 patients currently in hospitals in #England is up another 12.7% in a single day.
There are now 9,546 inpatients and that's 38.3% higher than a week ago..
The number of Mechanical Ventilation beds in use by #Covid19 patients in the #UK has actually fallen 18 today to 758, back to the number two days ago.
There are 16 fewer in #London (216) and #East is 10 lower at 91
Total #Covid19 admissions to hospitals in #England on 26 December was 1,374. (That's the latest day for which data is available)
That's 93 higher than the previous day and 48% higher than the week before.
#UK's #Covid19 cases and deaths update is delayed.
The health data on the Govt. dashboard is also delayed, but you already have that 😉
They estimate 5.30pm for publication.
#Switzerland sees a huge spike today today taking the 7 day infection rate back to near its all time high.
This looks much more than backlog and I am guessing #Omicron arrived just a couple of weeks after Delta peak.
13,344 new #Covid19 cases compared with 5,872 last Tuesday.
#Serbia's new wave is gathering pace.
1,676 new cases of #Covid19, up a third.
24 deaths.
#Ireland hits another all time high infection rate of 1,873 AD/M
Bad figures today from Dublin with another 9,006 new #Covid19 cases, 71% higher than this time last week.
Big numbers coming from #Montenegro now as #Omicron continues its relentless path through the Balkans.
1,120 more cases of #Covid19, a rise of 373% on last Tuesday. 3 deaths.
#Portugal the next to post an all time record number of new #Covid19 cases.
17,172 positive tests processed today, around treble last Tuesday. Over 8,500 in #Lisbon
19 deaths.
Astonishing data in #Greece today - new records for cases and infection rate.
21,657 new #Covid19 infections today, which is well over double the previous record.
The 7 day rate now an all time high 844 AD/M
61 deaths
#NorthMacedonia well up today too.
409 new #Covid19 infections, a rise of around a quarter.
10 further deaths.
129,471 new infections, almost 40,000 higher than a week ago.
Deaths data still delayed, only 18 reported today
#France has the highest ever daily #Covid19 figure seen outside America
179,807 new infections, with another rise in the death toll too as 290 more have died.
May I remind you that #France still bans Brits for "safety"😂
500 more #Covid19 patients are in hospital tonight: 17,405 up 8.3% in a week. I'd expect this to increase quite rapidly in the next two weeks.
3,416 in ICU, up 10.4%
#Spain sets a new record too.
99,671 more #Covid19 cases in the last 24 hours.
It's double last Tuesday's total, and that pushes the 7 day infection rate to a new all time high of 1,367 AD/M
114 Covid deaths while 9,852 patients are now in hospital, 322 more than yesterday
#Cyprus another to set a new record, passing 2k for the first time.
Just as worryingly the positive test rate is at its highest ever: 2.3%
2,241 new cases, nearly treble a week ago.
No deaths but 168 Covid patients now hospitalised, 81% of whom are unvaccinated
#Turkey hit their highest daily total since April.
32,176 new #Covid19 cases, more than 60% up on last Tuesday.
184 deaths
New cases total 30,726. That's down only a little over 4,000. It looks to me as though #Omicron is gaining ground. If that's true I'd expect cases to start rising again in around a week.
Wednesday's #Covid19 megathread makes an early start as there's so much news to bring you!
#Omicron takes centre stage in Europe with a raft of records (recap coming up), but #UK ministers are increasingly confident the NHS won't be swamped despite England's lack of restrictions
It turned out to be a terrible Tuesday, not just in #UK, which was just one of TEN European countries to hit all time high daily #Covid19 infection numbers.
Concern in #Norway. The #Omicron wave looked to be beyond the peak; is it making a comeback or is it still delayed Christmas cases?
4,702 new #Covid19 infections, fewer than 100 down on last Weds.
Better health data. 315 in hospital, down 13 since y'day, although 120 are in ICU
Monday's #Covid19 thread starts here. Still holidays around the world for many, including #UK. But here all eyes on Boris Johnson - will he, or won't he make more restrictions or even lockdown? We should know today.
I've got more hospital data in the thread, updated real time..
So let me start with #UK. I've managed to get new health data, which will be critical to the decision on new restrictions in #England
As of y'day there were 7,536 #Covid19 patients in English hospitals; up 17.1% in a week.
But 2,425 of those are in London and that's up 45.5%
Strangely, South-East & South-West areas of #England have fewer #Covid19 patients in hospital.
Thursday's #Coronavirus megathread starts here with the best #Covid19 global analysis and round up available on Twitter.
First a little quiz, answer in the next Tweet:
Do you know which country has had the most recorded cases of Covid19 as a percentage of population?
So I hope there was no cheating... I'll leave some blank lines here too in case some later viewers don't want the answer just yet...

.
.
So the nation with more #Covid19 cases than any other based on population is highly vaccinated #Seychelles at more than 20% infected.
Today I spent quite a long time being filmed/interviewed by @bbcturkce about #Covid19 and #Turkey. Not sure how much they will use, let's see.
Coincidentally the cameraman Efe, just happened to be in Kyiv as one of those using Ukraine for a 10 day stop off to avoid hotel prison!
The daily #Coronavirus megathread for Tuesday starts early, from Manchester airport.
Because of the early start I missed a few countries from yesterday's thread, first I'll update these #Covid19 totals. Tweets during the day may be delayed due to travel & connectivity issues
1/3 #GreekIslands - yesterday cases nudged lower again in #Greece and there were some very promising data from the islands too.
#Crete cut new cases of #Covid19 by 43% while for #Corfu it was a 48% fall and #Rhodes saw a reduction of 38%.
