#Russia's Chief Rabbi has fled the country because the government tried to force him to support the eradication of #Ukraine. The Russian "denazification operation" has devastated Jewish communities in Ukraine and is now de-Jewing Russia, too.
I thought it was weird to have #PKK advocates in the British Parliament, but they are kept on the fringe. Poor #Sweden is having its entire government and security policy held hostage by a PKK agent. Emotions/morality aside, it's a fascinating case study.
Good thread. It's so clear #Putin still intends to conquer the whole of #Ukraine and is doing this on an ideological basis, which makes him immune to costs that do not physically stop his army. He knows that if he succeeds, he will be remembered fondly.
War is a test of wills, as much as anything else. #Russia's government, having been surprised by the Western reaction, has fallen back on the idea that it can outlast us, that we will lose interest in #Ukraine. Important to falsify that.
#Ukraine's President Zelensky announces the launch of the "Book of Executioners", an information system to collate evidence of the #Russian soldiers "guilty of concrete cruel crimes against Ukrainians". i24news.tv/en/news/ukrain…
Should have already been done, but better now than never.
- There has been little movement in Severodonetsk over the last 24 hours
- #Russia has focused on Donbas, but is losing at the fringes of the theatre, notably around Kherson
#Russia evacuated the Chernobyl nuclear plant in late March, where they held hundreds of #Ukrainians hostage for weeks, but they destroyed computers, "100 liters of high-quality vodka", and everthing else, and left "mounds of defecation in each office" businessinsider.com/russian-forces…
The #US and allies are looking to supply #Ukraine with unnamed coastal vessels and anti-ship missiles and systems, according to @VOANews. The Biden administration began three weeks ago looking for ways to break the #Russian naval blockade. ukrainian.voanews.com/a/protykorabel…
No mystery about what is going on here: #Russia is preparing the ground to annex the occupied zones of #Ukraine
For those concerned about actual foreign involvement at the Maidan in 2014, the #Russian role in using lethal violence against the #Ukrainian might be something to look at.
I kid. Without the "US-backed coup" narrative, they have nothing.
Viktor Bulatov, a lieutenant in the #Russian airborne Pskov division, had written on social media that he wanted to stage a "Bucha in every Khokhol [derogatory term for Ukrainians] town". He was killed by #Ukraine's troops before he could.
Absolute clownshoes stuff yet again from #Germany: the M270 MLRs that Chancellor Scholz promised to #Ukraine will, despite promises of swift delivery, arrive by November. At the earliest. zeit.de/politik/auslan…
- #Russia is struggling to advance into the south of Severodonetsk city, despite concentrating artillery and air power on it
- Russia has resorted to unguided missiles because it is running short of precision weapons. #Ukraine's air defences holding.
#Russia is firing up to 50,000 artillery rounds per day and doing better at combined arms warfare. #Ukraine is running very low on ammunition for its Soviet-era weapons systems and Western weapons supplies are too slow and meagre to cover the gap. washingtonpost.com/world/2022/06/…
Review of Antony Beevor's new book about the Russian Civil War, says he leaves ideology out as a factor in explaining the cruelty of the war. It's the myth that will never die though to say the the "Whites' ideology" was "ferociously ... antisemitic". newstatesman.com/culture/books/…
There were nominal "White" units, especially in Ukraine, who carried out terrible pogroms in 1919. They did so in defiance of the "White" high command, which repeatedly condemned such behaviour and ordered the protection of Jews.
The problem for the "Whites" on this, as on so much else, was that it was not a unified army in a conventional sense, but a loose movement bound by anti-Bolshevism.
Was certain before checking that this person was American. Putting aside NATO being a Euro-American organisation and the existence of Turkey, this interpretation can only come from someone whose only frame of reference is American racial history and politics.
Thread: 9 June 2022: Day 106 of #Russia's invasion of #Ukraine
#Poland's President bluntly criticising #Germany ("doesn't give a damn about what's happening in Ukraine. They want ... cheap gas and oil") and #France. Rejects #Russia's nuclear blackmail as a good excuse for this behaviour.
At every single stage we have had this:
> "We can't supply x because training takes months"
> "We are now supplying x, and training that could have been completed by now is instead just beginning"
British freelance journalist Dom Phillips, a frequent contributor to @guardian, and his Indigenous traveling companion, Bruno Pereira, have gone missing in the far north-west of #Brazil, near the tri-border zone with Peru and Colombia, known to be lawless washingtonpost.com/world/2022/06/…
