The @WhiteHouse#monkeypox#MPX briefing was mostly very good news. New cases reports are way down across most of the US, and globally. But in the last week the demographics shifted, from a predominately white male outbreak to:
- 38% black men
- 25% Hispanic
- 26% white

About 540,000 doses of #Jynneos#vaccine have been admin'ed in USA, and some men are now getting their 2nd doses -- which are essential for effective protection.
But there is a mismatch.
While 38% of new cases are black men, only 12% of vax uptake is in that group.

The @CDCgov is shifting from from education/#vaccination campaigns at large gay pride events, to smaller, targeted efforts aimed at less-served groups.
Meanwhile, CDC says MPX "travels with" other STDs & #HIV -- 61% of diagnosed #monkeypox cases are co-infected.

Both the @NIH & @CDCgov have had to rob funds from other research and public health programs, as #Congress hasn't allocated special, requested #monkeypox funding. This is having some impact on #HIV and basic NIAID research funding.
At NIAID, research unfolds anyway.

5/#MPX
There is only 1 poxvirus treatment -- TPOXX -- and no good data on whether, or how well, it works. Studies have just begun.
There is concern abt drug resistance -- as is always the case w/mutating viruses when just one type of drug is used. NIAID is tracking it.

6/#MPX
The #Jynneos vax was invented for #smallpox & there is debate abt how well it actually works against #monkeypox, and at what doses. NIAID is starting clinical trials in both DR-Congo & the USA to study the efficacy of various vax doses, and TPOXX, vs placebos.

7/#MPX
There was strong agreement among the @WhiteHouse leaders that the gay community, in particular, merits the bulk of credit for achievements to date in controlling #monkeypox -- education, sexual behavior changes, & close collaboration w/public health by #LGBTQIA = the key.

Stark contrast between two major reports on the #COVID19#pandemic this week. One from @politico focuses on the Big Four NGOS that functioned outside of govts, raised $billions, & had pivotal influence over global policies. The other from @Commissioncovid@TheLancet looks...MORE
2/ more at the UN syst, #G20, @WHO & intl cooperation/governance (or lack thereof). In broad strokes both mega-reports blame the lack of global fairness, coordination & governance for #pandemic failures. But in very different ways. @politico says... politico.com/news/2022/09/1…
3/...that @gatesfoundation & @gavi & #COVAX & @CEPIvaccines & @wellcometrust -- the global Big Four NGOs -- largely failed to deliver on their #COVID19 promises for tests, vaccines, drugs for the World. Rpt blames patents protections & lack of policy-making transparency.

The 4 organizations gave $10 billion, combined, to the world #COVID19 response.
The @gatesfoundation gave more money for the @WHO response to #COVID19 than did the US government. Of course, #Trump pulled out of WHO and stopped the flow of cash to the UN organization.

On Aug10, 1776 the Declaration of Independence reached London. The 🇬🇧King was not amused. On this day, 8/22/1776, the largest armada ever, with more than 90 ships, lined up along Brooklyn shores, aiming a then-historic # of ship cannon. foxnews.com/lifestyle/this…

Here in Brooklyn we celebrate the Battle, even though Washington & rebel army beat a retreat. If the 15,000 Brit + Hessian soldiers, 5 War Ships and remaining armada had slaughtered the rebels & captured Gen. Washington, we'd all have British accents today & wave the Union Jack🇬🇧
The Brit/Hessian landing force entered Brooklyn near today's Verrazano Bridge. Dutch families betrayed the American rebels, guiding Red Coats to attack positions. Brave 400 rebels from MD & Del sacrificed in battle, giving Washington & the main rebel forces a chance to escape.
