☀️Will Food Containing #Insects be Labelled in The #EU? 1. Despite the environmental benefits, not everyone is pleased with the #EU's insect approval.
In France, right-wing politician Laurent Duplomb slammed the EU: “We cannot let the French eat insects without their knowledge.”
2. On 3rd Jan 2023, #EU released its guidelines authorising the placing on the market of Acheta domesticus (house cricket) partially defatted powder
as a novel food and amending Implementing Regulation (EU) 2017/2470. eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/…
3. How #EU is asking the entire #Europe to cook up insect-powdered food?
On 24 July 2019, the company Cricket One Co. Ltd (‘the applicant’) submitted an application to the Commission for authorization in accordance with Article 10(1) of Regulation (EU) 2015/2283. #Europe#EU
4. Applicant company wanted to place Acheta domesticus (house cricket) partially defatted powder on the Union market as a novel food. #EU#EUROPE#FOOD#insects
5. The application requested for partially defatted powder obtained from whole Acheta domesticus (house cricket) to be used in multigrain bread and rolls, crackers and breadsticks, cereal bars, dry pre-mixes for baked products, biscuits, dry stuffed #EU#EUROPE#FOOD#insects
and non-stuffed pasta-based products, sauces, processed potato products, legume- and vegetable-based dishes, pizza, pasta-based products, whey powder, meat analogs, soups, and soup concentrates or powders, maize flour-based snacks, beer-like beverages, chocolate confectionary,
nuts and oilseeds, snacks other than chips, and meat preparations, intended for the general population. #EU#EUROPE#FOOD#INSECTS
6. On 24 July 2019, the applicant also made a request to the Commission for the protection of proprietary scientific studies and data submitted in support of the application, namely, a detailed description of the production process:
(3); results of proximate analyses
(4); analytical data on contaminants
(5); results of the stability studies
(6); analytical data on microbiological parameters
(7); and, results of the protein digestibility studies #EU#EUROPE#FOOD#INSECTS
7. On 8 July 2020, the Commission requested the European Food Safety Authority (‘the Authority’) to carry out an assessment of Acheta domesticus (house cricket) partially defatted powder as a novel food. #EU#EUROPE#FOOD#INSECTS
8. On 23 March 2022, the Authority adopted its scientific opinion on the ‘Safety of partially defatted whole Acheta domesticus (house cricket) powder as a novel food pursuant to Regulation (EU) 2015/2283’ (9) in accordance with Article 11 of Regulation (EU) 2015/2283. #EU
9. The Authority considered in its opinion that the consumption of Acheta domesticus (house cricket) partially defatted powder may cause allergic reactions in persons that are allergic to crustaceans, mollusks and dust mites.
10. Furthermore, the Authority noted that additional allergens may end up in the novel food, if those allergens are present in the substrate fed to insects.
11. Therefore, it is appropriate that foods containing Acheta domesticus (house cricket) partially defatted powder are appropriately labeled in accordance with Article 9 of Regulation (EU) 2015/2283.
12. Finally EU decided in JAN 2023 that Acheta domesticus (house cricket) partially defatted powder is authorized to be placed on the market within the Union.
13. Acheta domesticus (house cricket) partially defatted powder shall be included in the Union list of novel foods set out in Implementing Regulation (EU) 2017/2470.
15. Which European countries are most willing to eat insects?
According to a 2020 report by the European Consumer Organization, only 10 percent of Europeans are willing to swap meat for insects. #EU#EUROPE#INSECTS#FOOD
16. But in another poll conducted by YouGov in 2021, France seems to be the country that’s the most receptive to the idea. 25% of the people surveyed said they’re willing to eat food that contains insect powder. Germany and Denmark also followed with 24 and 22 % respectively.
