#putin escalates by voicing his plans to deploy tactical nuclear weapons on #Belarusian territory.
It was planned well before. In 2020 #Lukashenko illegally seized power. In February 2022, he conducted an unlawful referendum that ditched the country's non-nuclear status. ⏬
putin voices a plan to modernize Belarusian aircraft to make them nuclear-capable and train Belarusian pilots to operate them. In December 2022, putin deployed, and in February 2023, the Belarusian reported that they started operating the #Iskander-M dual-capable missile systems.
On February 25, 2023, putin played an idiot linking his nuclear proliferation plans to armor-piercing rounds containing depleted uranium to be provided to Ukraine by the U.K.
Though the #Kaliningrad exclave allows Moscow to permanently threaten Europe with nuclear strikes, a deployment to Belarus might solve a logistical problem that is worsening with #Finland and #Sweden's membership in #NATO, thus turning the Baltic Sea into a NATO lake.
The move will pose an additional threat to #Poland and the #Baltic states. It will allow putin to claim a nuclear umbrella over Belarus, thus seeing any actions with regard to Belarus as a nuclear trigger.
It also means harsh repression of any attempt by Belarusian people to change its leadership either via protests or elections.
The international community must go beyond expressing deep concerns at a U.N. Security Council meeting.
One of the justifications for Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2014 and 2022 was alleged U.S. plans to deploy nuclear missiles to Europe, particularly Ukraine. Those allegations have been used to justify Russia's aggressive actions in Ukraine and as a nuclear blackmail of the West
Maybe it is worth the @POTUS to warn putin that though they initially had no plans to deploy any missiles in Europe, now they may change their mind.
The U.S. and its allies should respond with nuclear posture changes and possibly deploy additional necessary assets to the most exposed countries.
Given that Belarus, as an aggressor state under international law, is a legitimate military target, Ukraine may prevent a transfer of such weapons to their storage facilities and level those facilities and transportation infrastructure that would be used for delivery.
It's better not to allow Russia to replay the Caribbean crisis. The U.S. should also abandon a self-restriction policy on #ATACMS, #F16, and other systems for Ukraine.
Failure to deny Russia's proliferation of nuclear weapons would have dire consequences for the globe.

"#Xi’s peace offer to #Ukraine should be seen... as a #kabuki dance, in which the peace plan is offered in the full expectation that Ukraine will refuse it while giving the appearance of Chinese good faith, Professor Albion M Urdank wrote for the @FT. ⏬
He believes that "thus spurned, Xi will claim full justification in providing lethal weaponry to #putin so that he may carry on with success... The provision of lethal weaponry to 🇷🇺will mark Xi’s formal break with the west, for which he has been planning."
Professor Albion M Urdank believes Xi "will then turn his gaze to #Taiwan."
I'm not sure #Xi will jeopardize his trade with the #US and the #EU for #putin's strategic blunder.
It's nothing else but Western wishful thinking and the projection of their mindset to the wild territory that has been living in unfreedom and perverted reality for centuries. Some still believe that the West "lost" russia by not helping it more.
And there's the same naivety that engagement with the CCP would make PRC more democratic.
The other line of thought I'm afraid I have to disagree with is that prospects of severe sanctions may somehow deter PRC.
"Successive Tsars imposed their will on the Church, transforming it into a mere instrument for their strategic objectives… #putin’s russia simply renewed and accentuated this “tradition.” @EcuPatriarch ⏬
"Of special importance in this respect is #Panslavism, the ideology according to which all Slavs should be united under Moscow. This XIX century deeply racist ideology found its religious expression in ethnophyletism, condemned as a heresy by the Great Council of Const. in 1872.”
“The present incarnation of ethnophyletism is the fundamentalist ideology of #Russkii mir, the “#russian world.” This expression describes a supposed sphere of civilization including russia, Ukraine, Belarus as well as ethnic russians all around the world,
The #russian embassy in 🇬🇧 tried to mock @RishiSunak for legislation that prevents migrants from crossing the Channel on small boats.
They didn’t mention that 🇷🇺 is responsible for the largest European conflict since WWII that caused immense suffering and destruction in 🇺🇦. 1/5
The russians are responsible for 14,000 Ukrainians #killed in 2014-2022 and 8,173 more Ukrainians killed since 2022 (@UN_HRC). No one knows how many Ukrainians were murdered in #Mariupol, #Volnovakha, and other occupied cities, towns, and villages. 2/5
EVOLUTION OF DIPLOMACY. "Nothing about 🇺🇦without 🇺🇦" is extremely important for the Ukrainian nation. But it also serves the interests of other nations because it doesn't allow 🇷🇺to turn its aggression against Ukraine into a broader confrontation with 🇺🇸.
It's a failed attempt of #Moscow to impose the great power competition scheme and trade its "cooperation" on global issues for allowing it to re-establish spheres of influence in Europe that justified the "suspension" of their participation in the new #START Treaty.
There are no immediate negative consequences of such a decision, and, highly likely, there won't be any in the future, for a new nuclear arms race for Moscow would mean old results – a state collapse.
LONG-TIME APPEASEMENT (1991-2014). Due to the immense potential to destroy humanity, vast resources, and incurable optimism of the renaissance nations, 🇷🇺has been a prism through which the West has been looking at the nations in-between.
The brutal second #Chechen war, orchestrated by @putin to grip power, was hardly noticed. 🇷🇺was let in from the cold just a year after the invasion of #Georgia.
Contrary to common sense, the Kremlin was awarded more say in global affairs and even more role in #Europe, thanks to the Partnership for modernization Angela #Merkel had championed.
