Regarding attitudes towards the mobilized. I follow #Chechen telegram as part of my research on Chechnya. Chechens are very much in support of Ukraine & always have been. Not only do the share the colonial yoke of #RussianColonialism they share a history of mutual aid and care.🧵
At least as far back as the Ukrainian Genocide by Stalin, the #Holodomor, Chechens took in Ukrainians who fled. #Chechnya #RussianColonialism #Ukraine…
Additionally, during both Chechen Wars, first 1994-1996 when Chechnya won its independence *WITHOUT Western Aid*, and in 2000-? when they lost it, Ukrainians came and fought on the front lines along side Chechens. Chechens remember this. #Chechnya #RussianColonialism #Ukraine

Thread: 15 September 2022: Day 204 of #Russia's invasion of #Ukraine
#Russian soldier talking to his wife is somewhat unimpressed with the commanders and even less impressed with the #Chechen Kadyrovtsy, the "Akhmat", who "fucked off (i.e. ran away), the fucking cowards" as the #Ukrainians closed in.
In #Mariupol overnight, #Ukrainians sang the national anthem in Liberation Square, knowing it can get them arrested and worse by the #Russian occupation authorities in the city. A sense that liberation is coming is spreading.

#Russia #Chechen leader Ramzan #Kadyrov: "In recent days, we have been receiving information, but there hasn't been concrete explanations. Well today, the Ministry of Defense clarified the information, because of which they left the cities of #Izyum, #Kupyansk, #Balakleya.

It was forced to preserve human lives. But that doesn't mean anything. I, Ramzan #Kadyrov, officially declare to you that all these cities will be returned back. We have our people there already, and guys who are specially equipped for this work

#Kharkov #ukrainerussiawar
10 thousand more fighters are ready to leave, and we will reach #Odessa in the near future. And you'll see concrete results.
I am not a strategist like the Department of Defense, but mistakes were made, I think they will draw conclusions.

A mini thread on what "don" means in #Chechen.

First, it is a filler word, used by Chechens but perhaps not as liberally as Kadyrov... so what does it mean? (1/n)
"don" comes from the Chechen дуй хьуна? (dui hwuna)
First: хьуна is the dative form of the second person singular, i.e., "to you." Literary Chechen has eight cases: nominative, genitive, dative, ergative, instrumental, substantive, comparative, and locative...
Nom. хьо
Gen. хьан
Dat. хьуна
Erg. ахь
Inst. хьоьца
Subs. хьох
Comp. хьол
Loc. хьоьга

The nominative, dative, and ergative can all be subjects of a Chechen verb. Ergativity is a widespread feature of indigenous languages of the Caucasus.

Feelings of Deja Vu for a student of post-Soviet affairs: Are we back in the 1990s? Moscow's December 1994 intervention in an inner-Chechen conflict was the beginning of the end of Russia's Second Republic (after the First one of Febr-Oct 1917). 1/3
Moscow's September 1999 start of the #SecondChechenWar, against the background of, probably, #FSB-organized apartment bombings blamed on #Chechen terrorists, was the beginning of #Putin's popularity rise. Now, #Chechens are fighting on both sides of the #RussianUkrainianWar. 2/3
Ukrainian socio-economic life in the non-occupied territories has returned to levels of the 1990s. Russia's economic life will soon too be back to the 1990s. Chechnia may again become a headache for Moscow. More conflict in the Caucasus & Central Asia has become more likely. 3/3

"Both sides are looking to demonstrate they have options" per @CIA's Burns

Latest @DefenceHQ update:

- #Russia is trying to reinforce defensive lines in the occupied south-east

- #Ukraine applying pressure around occupied Kherson, signs of an impending counter-offensive, which is likely what has provoked the Russian defensive moves.

#Russia bombed a block of flats in Odesa overnight, killing at least ten civilians
Great move from #Canada. The worries about depleting Western weapons stockpiles are largely misplaced: what is happening in #Ukraine - defending Europe from #Russia - is what these weapons were acquired for in the first place.

#Severodonetsk - #Russian forces continued to make small gains in the city today. The #Ukrainian State Security Building was captured & territory towards the industrial sector to the W of the city. Despite rumors of collapse, #Ukrainian forces continue to put up stiff resistance.
Videos posted today by #Chechen fighters geolocated #Russian troops to the State Security Building just south of the frontlines from yesterday at: 48.944690, 38.489388. In the video the Chechen's tour the area with little tactical posture, meaning fighting is not close by.
#Ukrainian forces appear to be attempting to establish a defensive line in the W industrial sector of #Severodonetsk, but they are rapidly running out of space to withdraw towards. Soon #UAF will be forced to abandon the city & retreat to Lysychans'k & more defensible terrain.

#Severodonetsk - #Russian troops have made significant advances in the city today. #RUAF has advanced beyond the city concert hall & have captured government buildings in the city center. Geolocated videos show #RUAF in control of at least 50% of the city. Videos in next tweet.
Videos of #Chechen fighters from today show a tour of the city center. The blue and white roofed building has been geolocated to: 48.94644, 38.49439. The lack of fighting or tactical posture by #Chechen's indicates that the frontlines are far away from this location.
There are rumors that #Ukrainian forces have begun a general withdrawal from the NE side of the Donets River. This is likely to happen soon if it has not happened already, given that #Russian forces are now in a position to trap #UAF into pockets with no escape route to the SW.

#Britain @DefenceHQ take on #Mariupol

#Russia making "significant use of auxiliary personnel" per #Britain's @DefenceHQ

"This includes a deployment of #Chechen forces, likely consisting of several thousand fighters primarily concentrated in the #Mariupol & #Luhansk sectors”
#Chechen forces fighting for #Russia in/around #Mariupol & Luhansk "likely consist of both individual volunteers & National Guard units, which are routinely dedicated to securing the rule of Chechen Republic Head, Ramazan Kadyrov" per #Britain's @DefenceHQ

Update. After an operational pause to regroup and resupply after a massive artillery expenditure, #Russian forces continue their advance on the #Lysychansk cauldron. The series of events on #SiverskyiDonets crossings is complex & still unclear. Starting with the bridge revealed
revealed by #CNN (which I geolocated upon release) UA forces had success destroying several RU pontoon bridges. The latest video they released however, which was meant to show a RU vehicle drowning in the river, showed a third bridge still standing. Reports were received of the
forces that had crossed near Bilohorivka moving northeast towards Pryvillia. UA forces can still not move near the bank in many locations, though a couple of images were released of a UA reporter at the southern extreme of Bilohorivka where UA still hold the high ground.

#Mariupol & ISW Map Update - Despite declaring victory yesterday, #Russian Forces continued to battle #Ukraine Armed Forces and #Azov Regiment for control of #Azovstal. 🇷🇺 released videos that indicate it made more headway into the main plant grounds in the last two days. 🧵 Image
This video released yesterday indicates that #Russian forces were able to advance until the location shown in the map pin in the next tweet. There is an amazing amount of destruction visible in the video but most of it appears staged.
Here is our estimation on the location of this #Russian advance in the previous video. Image

#Russia has evidently claimed victory in #Mariupol. This is in spite of the fact that Russia does not control around 3.62 mi² (9.39 km²) of the city. The number of remaining defenders is unknown, but they have retained a degree of control around #Azovstal.…
In addition, #Russia announced plans to have a Victory Day Parade in #Mariupol on May 9, despite continued fighting that will be happening in the city since #Putin called off the final assault. Also, the city is completely destroyed as seen below.
#Chechen Fighters declared victory in #Mariupol today by standing in front a burning government building outside of the area currently controlled by #Ukraine defenders.

#Izyum Axis Update - #Russian forces are rapidly pushing #Ukrainian troops out of the town of #Rubizhne. The #Chechen and Russia flag have been raised on the edge of the town and #Ukraine is falling back. The sign in this video is the Rubizhne sign coming into the town.
Latest map of #Izyum Axis. #Ukraine needs to hold the town of #Rubizhne to prevent #Russia from starting encirclement of #Severodonetsk by cutting off primary logistics routes to the south. #Russia likely wants to isolate the city and UAF inside similar to #Mariupol. Image
The capture of #Severodonetsk would represent a much needed victory for #Russia. However, #Ukrainian Armed Forces have been determined to not sacrifice large population centers without a fight.#Rubizhne is the first step in the battle for #Severodonetsk.

#Mariupol Update and ISW Map - small pockets of resistance remain in the urban parts of the city, but are primarily small groups of 1-4 defenders that were able to remain hidden. At the #Azovstal Plant, the #Russian forces have made entry and are actively clearing the grounds.
#Chechen fighters have been filming in warehouses of captured equipment and engaging in sporadic fighting with #Azov and #UAF still inside the main buildings. #Chechen TikTok videos have limited combat footage in them, which likely means little fighting is still taking place.
This morning 120 Ukrainian civilians left the plant via a humanitarian corridor, but were being guided by 🇷🇺 to an unk location. The #Ukrainian defenders in #Azovstal likely have near zero manpower or ammo, but did use an ATGM to destroy a #Russian armored vehicle this morning.

Latest ISW map of #Mariupol. The pocket around the #Azovstal plant is collapsing quickly. Very likely that #Ukrainian troops there have little to no ammo. Some fighting from holdouts around #Primorsky district, but likely just clearing ops at this point.
Lack of significant arms or ammo is also supported by the low level TU-22 bombing runs earlier today. As well as the mass gatherings of #Chechen fighters in #Mariupol for more propaganda videos. It may take several more days for #Russia to capture of kill every last fighter.
However, for all intents and purposes, including historical records, the battle of #Mariupol should be over within the next 48 hours or so.

The #Chechen TikTok squads are starting to post victory videos around #Mariupol. This almost certainly means the western pocket has fallen and the one around #Azovstal will fall soon. Given the speed of collapse in west the last UAF probably only have 2-3 days before it’s over.

#Mariupol has fallen. There remain pockets of resistance. Thermal satellite data tells the story. Fading dots are days old hot spots, bright ones are from the last 24 hours. As we had expected, the fighting moved to the that hotel area in southern edge of the west bank. The last
intense shelling there was on the 30th. It seems to have been clear by the next day or two. April 1st saw a complete lull in artillery fire as forces consolidated the linkup, cleared out taken areas, and repositioned to attack remaining Ukr held pockets. We see no shelling in
#Azovstal industrial for many days now. It is likely clear from any active resistance positions, and the main roads have been in RU hands (including for obs. to west bank positions). We saw infantry forces fight & take the outskirts. However, we are likely to see evidence of
