One potentially emotive flashpoint concerns the church in #Ukraine. The Govt refused to extend the lease to the #Moscow branch of the Orthodox Church and effectively evicted the Russian-aligned priests from #Kyiv-Perchersk Lavra y'day.
But they were holding another service today
⚡️Breaking⚡️
Three Russians and a Swiss banker, who helped #Putin's friend set up a bank account without due diligence, have all been found guilty in the last few minutes.
Transactions exceeded $50m, with no questions asked. The guilty have received suspended 7-month jail terms
Evan Gershkovich was detained in #Yekaterinburg yesterday, accused of spying. He was investigating #Wagner's relationship with the regular army and the war. The FSB says he was collecting classified information.
#Russia's covert recruitment campaign to boost the army has continued, but a major new drive for 400,000 "volunteers" looks imminent.
Britain's report this morning says this will turn into forced recruitment, but still won't solve the problem with lack of hardware in #Ukraine.
The near-panic of the Occupiers in and around #Melitopol continues.
More "dragon's teeth" are appearing in wheat fields near the city. But they are designed to stop older tanks and Leopards and Challengers should be able to overcome them when the time comes.
In the last 24 hours #Ukraine only managed to destroy one enemy tank. I think this is probably influenced by the weather as much as anything.
The number of artillery systems hit is almost double the daily mean, but killed invaders from #Russia remains lower than most of March.
In an attempt to aid its dodgy recruitment campaign, #Russia has promised new conscripts won't be sent to Occupied #Ukraine.
But that didn't help one soldier who was shot and wounded in #Bryansk overnight. Looks like a friendly-fire incident from another nervous serviceman.
Tensions still high as Moscow-aligned religious figures reluctantly leave the #Kyiv Perchersk Lavra.
Some have been seen "stealing" paintings and religious icons, while this 'monk' seemed to object to the camera of a state news channel filming his departure:
Oops! #Hungary has been added to #Russia's naughty list - the list of "unfriendly countries".
What went wrong?
I love this story..
Schoolchildren in #Japan helped #Ukraine
Knowing sunflowers were a huge part of #Ukraine's economy and identity, they planted a whole field and now reaped the reward, selling the oil to raise funds, which were given to #Ukraine's Embassy in Japan.
I've heard some people say #Russia is full of s**t.
Still theft, but I guess at least it's #Ukraine dirt now 😂😂🇺🇦
#Russia has hit a village in #Kherson region with guided aerial bombs.
Regional Head Oleksandr Prokudin published this video from the village of #Lviv near #Beryslav saying more than 10 private houses were hit. Fortunately no casualties.
Thought they'd never leave ... Austria's Raiffeisen Bank, which is scared to be on Twitter, has finally said it is selling its operation in #Russia. Not before being accused of recognising occupied territories and of course taxes helping #Russia wage war in #Ukraine.
A French court has refused to extradite Konstantin Zhevago to #Ukraine.
Kyiv accused the oligarch of embezzling $70m, but as a former MP outside of Zelenskyy's party, he says it "confirms that the case against him is political and has no legal basis."
A new entry for #RussiaOnFire today, spotted by Carolynne, to whom I give thanks.
The market at the railway station "Privokzalny" in #Pyatigorsk (#Stavropol region) saw a fire develop into a huge blaze. The problem is all the stalls are so close together
#Kharkiv has been hit this evening with a volley of missiles.
Six hits have been recorded on the city, confirmed by the Mayor. No word yet on damage or casualties.
The first arrival happened just as the air raid siren sounded.
This was one of the explosions heard across the city. It's believed one of three missiles fired at ZP exploded right after being launched above occupied #Tokmak.
In #Sloviansk and #Kramatorsk there are also sounds of explosions and problems with electricity in the area.
Hello and welcome to the daily thread for Friday, with all the news on #Ukraine's defence of its homeland and indeed existence, against #Russia's aggression.
It's Day 401, with all the news you need!
Missed something on Thursday? Click and scroll here:
I'll start with #Russia's losses on the battlefield (as estimated by #Ukraine)
Numbers still well done on peaks. A number of factors: awful weather, and highly likely the invaders are short on cattle/soldiers and ammo meaning fewer attacks across the frontline.
Welcome to Daily Thread number 399 with all the important news of #Russia's illegal war in #Ukraine.
However don't forget that it's over 3,300 days since the first invasion of sovereign Ukrainian territory by Putin. Had the West acted decisively then this wouldn't have happened.
... and leading on from that, if we fail to act decisively now or "seek peace" on the wrong terms, we will face another war and a larger crisis a few further years down the line.
Better late than never. We must support #Ukraine until Russia stops all aggression.
Plenty of news yesterday, including #France recognising #Holodomor as genocide, the IOC President desperately trying to stay friends with Uti-Puti and an armed assault on a police station in a southern republic in #Russia.
#Russia's forward momentum in #Ukraine appears to have stalled and splits and tensions are starting to show among the illegal invaders, from the top down.
Here's another daily thread with #Ukraine news updated throughout the day.
As usual, here's a handy link to yesterday's thread for those who missed anything, such as some tasty fires, a kicking 'priest' and sadly, more war crimes and devastation.
