Let's talk about KE boarding schools & why I walked out of my Catholic school without permission in broad daylight *they call it sneaking* 😡
Cleanliness, food & congestion was largely kinda properly managed Our biggest problem was teacher-student-parent relationship which was ZERO
Any parent seen to be inquisitive about anything was seen as an intruder and this meant their child paid for the "meddling" of their parent
Teachers believed that all of us were guilty until proven innocent of EVERYTHING so anything that happened was a lie even when you fell ill
Once during a typhoid outbreak 3/4 of the school was in heavy paracetamol dosage even though the symptoms weren't going away
When I asked to be taken to the hospital for proper treatment I was inturn punished. Whipped with an iron box wire how dare I ask. As who?
Meanwhile my deskmate wasn't even able to bathe herself she was bed ridden from the vomiting and diarrhoea yet still on paracetamol
Finally when some students passed out in dormitories it kinda seemed serious administration took them to hospital the rest, paracetamol
Even when my aunty came to visit me during the same weekend of the outbreak she wasn't allowed take me home for treatment NO PERMISSION
The administration was hell bent on fact that anyone who can walk isn't sick you just want a holiday after all its a Catholic school PRAY
So I walked at 6am in the morning without permission and went home. Left everything and was ready to be expelled. They said I will see fire
Getting home I was hospitalized for three weeks I had malaria +++ and the widal test proved positive for typhoid the doctor was shook. SHOOK
I remember him saying I'll be on medication for a long long time and he was right I missed an entire term of school 2mnths at home very sick
When my parents went to school to ask why a sick child was detained witht treatment they said "you know gals its always one thing or another
The school was so rude they told my parents that I wanted special treatment there were students sicker than me who were sticking it out
The school said the only reason they aren't considering expelling me was because I performed well that if I was stupid I should be gone 😣😣
My school considered our endurance for brutality as discipline. That the less you detested being abused the better disciplined you were WTF
Many many gals were beaten, left to sleep out in the cold and my school was cooooold denied food in the name of discipline
I remember teachers forcing stufents to paint the school before any parents gigg talkin bout you wont embarras us before your parents
There's so much about boarding schools that needs addressing and brutalising students isnt the answer re Matinagi's comments
We must discuss and understand mental health as a disease amongst us even in schools. I knew many gals who struggled deeply in silence
What happened in Moi girls is heartbreaking, concerning and should be dealt with holistically without hast. It is deeply rooted
Most KE boarding schools are like covert prisons it is a problem.
