This isn't from the 1924 DNC. This is literally a photo of Klan members marching in honor of a slain police officer wisconsinhistory.org/Records/Image/…
Here @DineshDSouza is trying to tie the 1920s Klan to Democrats and the real photo literally ties them to racist police.
Also FWIW this is the Wisconsin Historical Society notice for this image
(And h/t to @CleverTitleTK who's been pointing out the misuse of this photo for at least a month)
Why did the Klan get involved? The officer was probably killed by Italians in Madison's Little Italy.
There had been a string of gun violence around Madison's Little Italy in the teens & 20s -- twelve murders in just ten years.
Police couldn't solve the crimes..
... because the "the walls in 'the bush' haven't the ears they ought to have"
It was hard to find jurors who hadn't heard of the case.
The Klan "offered 200 members as special deputies to 'clean up' Little Italy" but were refused by officials.
The two men tried for the officer's murder-w/a lot of evidence-were let off by a jury because... they'd been beaten by the police.
So the state went after them for other, lesser crimes.
In the end, the local & federal police cracked down on the liquor business in Madison's Little Italy.
Klan members ~may~ have well been involved.
So, to sum up: This is a photo of Klan members using the death of a police officer as an excuse to crack down on Italian immigrants...
.. by deputizing Klan members as officers of the state.. but the state couldn't get a conviction on probable killers b/c of police brutality
And the moral of the story is, why does anyone possibly follow @DineshDSouza?
