On March 11, 2011, a massive earthquake and tsunami hit Japan. At 12:33 pm EST President Obama announced an aircraft carrier was en route.
The next day Secretary Clinton offered “immediate disaster relief assistance.” and SecDef Gates added “We will respond to any need.”
March 12 the 7th Fleet deployed 2 destroyers for search and recovery. The 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force prepositioned forces, supplies.
By March 16 military flew 113 helicopter sorties and 125 fixed wing sorties assisting in search and rescue and delivering water and food.
By March 23 the US had 20 ships, 140 aircraft and 19,000 sailors and marines supporting the relief effort.
We must do better for our fellow Americans in Puerto Rico.
