I've been mulling over my thoughts on Romance think pieces and so called criticism. And I think gonna tweet about what bugs me the most.
1. my thoughts apply to criticism from men and women alike, because women shit on romance too. a lot.
2. Here goes. Human beings need love. Full stop. And when I say love I'm including familial and platonic love.
3. Even the most introverted of us need positive human connection. Look up studies on babies that go untouched. Just check that out.
4. One thing I've received praise on is friendships in my stories. I love to write about platonic AND romantic love. both matter.
5. Romance at its core is about the potential for happy, positive romantic human connection and how that changes us.
6. Now most stories across all of literary history have some time of love at their core. Romance simply demands a happy ending. That's it.
7. How many lit fic classics have we all been forced to read about love and obsession and lust with fucked relationships and sad endings???
8. The world of criticism has this weird obsession with suffering. That sadness and suffering somehow make something better.
9. So when I read ole Robby's piece in the NYT and thought back to many like it, I kept think about the value and expectations of happiness.
10. I also keeping thinking about happiness in real life and how we are all constantly chancing it and devaluing it in our entertainment.
11.And then I gots thinking about people who in real life are in love, love love, chase love, but somehow think its stupid in entertainment
so really I want to someone to explain to me how you fell in love and got married and you think stories about love are soooooo stupid.
13. Explain to me how your media faves have heavy as fuck romance plots, but you cant see them that way cause they arent framed as such
14.Then explain to me how love from someone (your parents, friends, partners, even strangers) have kept you alive, but love stories are dumb
15. Explain to me how you wouldn't be offended if i told your wife was a dumb asshole for taking the time to get to know and love you.
16. I am so grateful for everyone who has ever loved me. Everyone who has used their love to lift me up.
17. And I am grateful for every happy love story that has helped keep the darkness away when i felt it starting to overwhelm me.
18. So what I'm saying is maybe appreciate the lifeblood of our human existence and dont shit on stories that celebrate it. END
Oddly enough this is the shirt I have on today. 😝
