1. Something about political choices that I think people need to understand. There is a difference between your ideals and practical reality
2. For instance, I hate Citizens United. It's a horrible, wrongheaded decision. And I will back any effort to overturn it by Constitutional
3. amendment. I am ideologically opposed to the idea of money as speech, which allows the richest to buy elections. Full stop.
4. However, the reality is that Citizens United is the rules of the game right now. And in order to win, Dems have to play by those rules.
5. We can -- and must -- demand transparency and accountability of our politicians. But asking Dems to hamstring their electoral chances
6. and fall on their swords over an issue of ideological purity is both rock stupid and counterproductive. We have to acknowledge reality.
7. This is important as pertains to the upcoming SCOTUS case on gerrymandering. It is HIGHLY likely that SCOTUS will uphold partisan
8. geryymandering as the new normal. It will become the new rules of the game. If and when that occurs, we have to acknowledge that.
9. I hate gerrymandering no matter who does it. It corrupts the whole process. BUT, if SCOTUS decides that it's the rules of the game, then
10. We have to treat it exactly as we do CU. Work to have it overturned by Constitutional Amendment if possible, but also work to win
11. elections and turn the tables by gerrymandering the shit out of every state we can. It's a horrible, distasteful choice. But that's
12. the reality. We can't back off on principle, because the GOP won't. And we've seen the devistating effects of GOP rule all too often.
13. Would I rather the lawn of the land mandate a system of free and fair districting? Absolutely. But unless the Roberts Court suprises the
14. hell out of me, that's not where we're going to be in 2018 and beyond. So we'd better be prepared to play as ruthless as the GOP.
15. Or we're going to principle ourselves into a permanent, SCOTUS-approved, minority of the majority. End rant.
