Thread: let's talk about Twitter's filters and how to review & manage incoming threats.
Twitter implemented a lot of really good filters for notifications. Props to them.
I highly recommend using these filters when you're under attack or if you're just generally at risk.
However, there's a major drawback to using them: Twitter offers no way to review filtered tweets.
If you're receiving threats or worried about being doxed, you *need* to review them. So, I've got a hack for this.
First, sign up for IFTTT. ifttt.com
Create a new Twitter account, and enable this applet. ifttt.com/applets/n5tLDh…
When it asks you to set up the Twitter channel, authenticate using the new Twitter account you created.
I'm not 100% certain on how IFTTT uses the Twitter API, so using your normal login *might* be OK - but I prefer this approach.
It'll create a folder in your google drive called IFTTT. This will have a spreadsheet of all your mentions.
When the spreadsheet is full, it creates a new one. This spreadsheet contains the date, username, tweet content, and a link to the tweet.
However, reviewing all of your mentions if you're under attack is a pain in the ass and emotionally draining for targets of abuse.
One thing I recommend to people that are going through some shit is to have a trusted friend review mentions for them.
It's way less emotionally intensive for that friend, & it can be a relief to not do it yourself - and to know that someone has your back.
This IFTTT approach is great, because you can share the contents of that Google Docs folder with a friend.
They don't need write access, but if you wanted, you could create another doc where the friend posts tweet links that need to be reviewed.
I've been using this for the past year. You can set up additional search terms, too, like your real name or your home address.
Twitter's lack of a way to review filtered tweets has been a major point of contention to me for a while. If they won't fix it, hack it. 💃
