If games are art then we have to embrace the idea that they don't have to be fun. Art is not always fun. It covers a wide spectrum of emotions, and concepts. 1/6
I did not make "Everything is going to be OK" to be fun. Making this entertaining, I felt, would devalue the messages. It felt wrong to frame these topics as "fun" because they are not. 2/6
Also framing these in a context where the "player" has control, or there is any power dynamic in any traditional sense, was not what I wanted. This is contradictory to the art's message. Same reason as traditional "fun" would be. 3/6
I made "Everything is going to be OK" to speak to a deeper human condition.
Focusing on fun, entertainment, and traditional game design would not support this. The intentions where very specific. It's a conscious choice. It doesn't exist to be entertainment. 4/6
Traditional game design is an established ruleset to accomplish certain things. It's not an end-all. I'm aware of these rules, but I like rejecting them. They exist to create a specific thing and that's not for everyone. There are lots of other things to create too. 5/6
It's like a language that you create. You can discover your own "rules". Standards don't exist for this stuff, and I think that's why these sort of "games" are so valuable. Each has it own unique irreplaceable voice.
That's a good thing and there is room for that. 6/6
