It takes a special kind of somebody to shill for vouchers, charters, and defunding of public education, then claim that biggest danger to kids is "discipline reform" i.e. reducing school suspensions. And yet @Phillydotcom gives this guy the bandwidth: philly.com/philly/opinion… 1/
I'm mom to 3 #PhlEd kids, former teacher and as a Councilmember fully support call to end K-5 suspensions. They're a result of poor practices & lack of resources/supports for kids. Thx to @edlawcenterpa @YUCphilly @215studentunion for leading that call. 2/
This year we won a commitment to end K suspensions, which #PhlEd reported to change in teacher practices. Next Sept., #PhlEd will end suspensions in K-2. 3/
In the meantime, we put a nurse & counselor in every public school and doubled the number of social workers. Our job is not to leave schools bereft but add resources and ideas to their toolkit for helping vulnerable kids. 4/
And so here comes Max Eden, who writes wholly unsubstantiated pieces for the Manhattan Institute, including lovelies like this. 5/
Max Eden 💕💕 “zero tolerance” charters like Success Academy with high suspension and expulsion rates. Guess where those kids end up? 6/
Let this sink in: A corporate ed think tank reformer, shilling for vouchers and the most extreme of charters, claiming to wanna fight for black and brown kids in Philly by ADVOCATING for suspensions! Not resources. Suspensions. 7/
Also notice his (il)logical leaps of assumption. Sure PBIS works, but only with funding, and heck none of y'all will argue for that, amirite Max? 8/
School suspension and expulsions are as much a racial justice issue as they are an educational issue. Until we end practices deeply shaped by racial bias, we have a hard time forcing educators and systems to think differently. We're trying to change this in #PhlEd. 9/
What we don't need are 2000s-era corporate ed reformies re-hashing the same tropes and "charters solve everything" blarney we've heard for two decades. Take it elsewhere. We got work to do here. END
