(1/13) There was a family: mum, dad and four kids. They lived in quite a nice house with their lodger Rafał. Some of the family thought it might be a good idea to move house so they took a vote on it.
(2/13) The oldest daughter was away at university and they didn’t let her vote. The youngest son wasn’t asked to vote either, because he was only 17 years old and Dad said that was too young to get involved in such an important decision.
(3/13) Though he'd lived with them for years, always paid his rent on time & was a good tenant, Rafał wasn’t consulted either since he wasn’t a family member.
Pre-vote, the family discussed where they might move to. Each had different ideas & they didn’t agree anything specific.
(4/13) Dad had said he was sure they could move to an even nicer house in the same area and end up paying less each month so they would be able to have more expensive holidays in future, and the younger daughter liked the sound of that.
(5/13) Her brother didn’t vote because he couldn’t be arsed. That left three people to vote: father and daughter voted to move and mum voted to stay.
(6/13) Then Dad said that as a result of the vote they would definitely leave the house by the end of the year. He put the house on the market, got a buyer quickly and agreed to complete the sale at the year end.
(7/13) Although he hadn’t yet sorted out where they would move to or done any research into the local housing market, Dad assured them that he was on the case and would it all be fine.
(8/13) Now, with not long to go until the end of the year, the best that Dad’s been able to come up with is a house that’s smaller, in an area that’s not as nice and will cost more.
(9/13) Dad has said Rafał’s welcome to carry on lodging with them but Rafał’s not sure he wants to. If he goes then the family finances will be even more stretched and they will miss all the ways he used to help around the house.
(10/13) The daughter who voted to leave is not really looking forward to having to share a bedroom and living in a scruffy area with no amenities.
(11/13) Mum has suggested to Dad that since it looked like things were not quite turning out as anyone had expected, it might be a good idea to have another vote to see how everyone feels now.
(12/13) But Dad says the will of the household was decided when they voted months ago and that must be respected, so they are definitely moving out; the family can have another vote but the only choices can be to move to the smaller, more expensive house or be homeless.
(13/13) He says that giving the family the option now to cancel the move and stay put would be a cynical betrayal of democracy.
Mum thinks Dad’s gone off his rocker.
(End)
