have i already gone off on you on my "broccoli and cheese theory"? it's basically this
Republicans sold a lot of broccoli (small-govt, austerity, upward redistribution) by seasoning it with cheese (racism, attacks on "cultural elites")...
they sold so much broccoli that way that they started to think people really liked broccoli. but along comes Donald Trump, selling straight cheez whiz
even after all that they've still convinced themselves that 2016 represents, if you will, a broccoli mandate

every argument like this needs to contend with the fact that President Trump was chosen by the anti-majoritarian “moderating” institution over the preferences of the popular will.
“we can’t trust the people because they’ll elect demagogues” is a weak argument when the people don’t choose the demagogue but the intervening political mechanism overrules them
this essay loses credibility by not noting that what we have isn’t “mob rule,” but minority rule: a fringe of wealthy elites is the faction stoking fear to seize power and making it harder for popular will to express itself.

the successful inflation of MS-13 into a perceived nationwide existential threat justifying a massive increase of ethnically-selective state force should make everyone nauseated and terrified.
politicians who have seized on MS-13 as an election issue - unambiguously, stoking racism - have permanently stained themselves morally.

Did #Austerity Cause #Brexit? I have received some comments on the paper that have engaged with the data, but am more than happy to stand my ground. Here is why...
Recently, Noah Carl @NuffieldCollege studied national level opinion poll time series, arguing that the lack of evidence of an uptick in post 2010 support for Leave is evidence suggesting that austerity had nothing to do with #Brexit. See his comment here osf.io/zbgt3/
So what are the problems with this approach.
1) Opinion polls do not rely on the same sampling population, so a lot of time variation that is so crucial given the tight referendum results are well within the margins of error

Happy to! Here is your primer on what the hell is happening in Australia, as retold by me, who is not an Australian!

First thing to know about #auspol (which is their national political hashtag) is that Aussies are just insanely backstabby, politically speaking.
Also these people hold grudges so strongly that any Appalachian would be impressed and a bit worried.

Australia has a multiparty parliamentary system with ranked voting, which means it’s nearly impossible for one party to hold power alone. They form coalitions with others.
Just at the moment, the people in charge are the Liberals, in coalition with right-wing parties like the Nationals and One Nation. Libs are basically Bush Republicans with a lot of Paul Ryan tossed in. Nats is sort of Tea Partyish and One Nation is racist and also fully bonkers.
