Day 2 of the census citizenship trial is at a break. On the stand this morning is Joseph Salvo, NYC’s Chief demographer. He hit over and over again how much more accurate census data is if people self respond versus if census enumerators follow up
He showed data showing how the accuracy of responses dropped significantly when people don’t respond on their own
Salvo also told a story to highlight the severe consequences of bad census data.

In Georgia, SoS Brian Kemp was on notice a system they used to flag voter registration was discriminatory and inaccurate. Lawmakers stuck with it anyway. 53,000 people's registrations are now in suspense, approx 70% of whom are black huffingtonpost.com/entry/georgia-…
Also in Georgia officials in one county wanted to close 7/9 polling places, but it quickly became public they had no reason for doing that. They kept the polling places open after public outcry. Since 2013, the state has closed 8 percent of its polls ajc.com/news/state--re…

Here is how they can vote:
This is a win for voting rights groups that sued. It deals with a portion of the 53,000 people on the voter registration suspense list.

Overwhelming majority of 53,000 were not flagged for citizenship. They were flagged because their information didn't match with SSN database
This is the judge explaining the problem. Someone can get a driver's license in Georgia if they are not a citizen. If that person then becomes a citizen and registers to vote, the state driver's database will flag them as a non-citizen

Conor Lamb beat Rick Saccone by just ~625 votes out of more than 228,000 ballots cast.

Libertarian Party candidate Drew Miller got 1,379 votes. Had half of them voted for Saccone, he would have won.
