It's a new week. Last week was tragic. Don't forget it. But also don't forget that America is not a nation of two parties; it is a nation of 325 million people of diverse backgrounds, beliefs, and opinions. The majority of those 325 million people lie between two extremes. (1/x)
We must find a way to come together in order to create solutions rather than becoming even more polarized. Gun violence in America is not a simple problem; it will not have a simple solution. No solution will please all parties, and none will end gun violence entirely. (2/x)
Suggesting guns be eliminated entirely is both impracticable and harmful to the discussion. Arguing that the Second Amendment is absolute/immutable shows a failure to recognize changes in technology and society (and the fact that the Constitution was designed to be altered) (3/x)
The energy right now can drive change. But it must be channeled into workable solutions, rather than driving the wedge that divides us even deeper. And it must persist until we have done everything we can to reduce the number of firearm injuries/deaths in our nation. (4/x)
We will not all agree about the changes that need to be made. But it's time to start funding research, listening to experts, implementing changes, evaluating the effects, and continuing to refine our policies in order to work towards a safer world for our children. (5/5)
