I shouldn’t watch Hollywood movies cuz they always put the liberation of colonized people in someone else hands 😭😭😭 Black panther spoilers coming up.
Immediately I related to Killmongers anger as a poor kid from the hood who has every reason to be angry at being stepped on by evil white men & being neglected/abandoned by those who claim to be “good” people. His rage at injustice is why I relate to him, root for him.
Even when he challenges and kills T’Challa, like yeaaa if yall got a weak leader who won’t stand up for what’s morally right, he should be replaced. Cuz then Killmonger and Nakia could've worked together 😫
Killmonger understands oppressed peoples liberation is tied up together, but he’s still heartbreakingly written as abusive&violent/acting on toxic masculinity/hurting women&elder/not listening to reason. He replicates colonizers behaviors w no self-awareness.
Nakia has compassion for oppressed peoples even though she's untouched by colonization. I’m jealous of her nation that was able to entirely defend its people from invaders, something we’ve been unable to do.
Still, by the end of the movie her campaign to help oppressed people was liberalized and simplified to an outreach center in the hood instead of explicit tactical underground armed uprising against colonizers, which it really seemed like that’s where they were headed right!?🤔
So for all of us that relate to Killmonger, the kid from Oakland, are we all 2 fkd up to lead our own struggles for liberation?? All of us from the hood/rez, all of our black and brown kids trapped in the military, all of us that are too angry, that are afflicted by colonization
we're supposed to await salvation from an outside force? for someone from a different reality who can save us an who hasn't been broken the way we have been in our efforts to survive … And when they do arrive to save us… they’re gonna build an outreach center???
I know it’s Hollywood and I don’t expect them to ever actually legitimize radical anti-colonial politics of self-defense, but it’s too real of a fear for me. In building movements, seeing how quickly people turn against each other, how people choose to make money off the movement
how folks who claim to be “decolonizing” replicate oppressive behaviors that have been imposed on us, esp abusive men or people replicating “masculinity”. It worries me that as a whole we are too far gone to protect our waters, our land, our children.
But all we got is us, no one from Wakanda, no one from a different reality, no one unaffected by colonization. And if I’m gonna keep trying I have to believe we’re not too broken.

Movie was stil dope af tho.
