Superintendent Runcie: focus continues to be on supporting MSD shooting victim families. He will discuss their preparation for students return
Superintendent: today teachers are coming in and out. It’s an informal day for teachers to meet with each other and spend a couple of hours at the school
Superintendent: Sunday 3-6pm open “house” for students to come back and look at any schedule changes they may have, received counseling if needed
Superintendent: Monday and Tuesday staff will return to the school full time to prepare for their students. Extensive counseling and support services will be offered
Superintendent: classes for students will resume Wednesday. Modified schedule for remainder of that week, classes 7:40am-11:40am. Will be a week of transition and going through the healing process together
Superintendent: maintenance folks have worked diligently since the weekend to get the school ready. They repaired doors, replaced glass, painted and pressure washed
Superintendent: building 12 will not be accessible. Testing of fire alarms will go on today. @browardsheriff has introduced semi automatic rifles for officers on campus. This is short term to prevent any copycat incidents from happening
Superintendent: has asked @browardsheriff to not have SRO’s that are in elementary schools have rifles on them. School board will discuss how they feel about the heightened security for the long term
School board chair: grateful for worldwide support. Text 20222 with message PARKLAND to give 10 dollar donation to victims and families
Superintendent: students and teachers who had classes in building 12 will be moved to other areas on campus but will stay with their current class schedule
Superintendent: outraged and upset over news that came out yesterday regarding SRO not going into building 12 during the shooting.
Superintendent: teachers who returned today have a ton of courage. They’re eager to get back and trying their best to be strong for their kids who they love
Superintendent: totally against arming teachers
Superintendent: would rather spend money adding more officers on campus then to arm teachers.
Superintendent: does not approve of putting guns in the hands of teachers. They already have enough on their plates. Instead there should be more of an investment made in law enforcement and their presence on school campuses
Superintendent: not clear as to WHY officer did not enter the building.
Superintendent: building 12 accommodated 550 students. There are 3300 students at the school.
Superintendent: will remain flexible and continue to provide support to any student or staff member hesitant to come back to MSD. If anyone wishes to transfer to another school the district will work with them.
Superintendent: video was operating in real time which is why Aaron Feis was able to respond immediately to where the shooter was
Superintendent: video surveillance system provided high quality footage in real time the day of the shooting
Superintendent: no one at all has been allowed into building 12. Staff removed personal belongings from the building and this past weekend teachers and students were able to come get their possessions
Superintendent: need funding from the state to build a new building of freshman building is to be torn down
Superintendent: gave state cost of $28.5 millions dollars. That’s what they’ll need to tear down building where the shooting happened and build a new one
Superintendent: thankful legislature is still in session and hopeful lawmakers will approve giving the district funds to tear building down and build a new one
