Rams & Eagles are in peak Super Bowl mode. Both have starting QBs with 3 more years on their cheap, rookie deal. The salary cap has risen by $22M since they were signed & they don't have to spend that on a starting QB now or in the near future. It's an arms race at this point.
Half of the last 6 Super Bowls were won by teams with QBs in their rookie deal. The others were Brady/Peyton playing below-cost at QB. We now have a huge influx of potential franchise QBs in this year's draft. The NFL the next several years can be anyone's to win. Should be fun.
With the extra cap $ to spend, now more than ever it is incumbent upon teams to 1) understand how to win most efficiently given current rules, 2) build a roster to maximize opportunity for 1), and 3) coach the team optimally. Even more competitive to win it all moving forward.
The last QB#1 drafted before the 2011 CBA was Bradford in 2010. His deal was 6 yr, $78M. Compare to last QB#1 who was Goff in 2016: 4 yr, $27.9M. But apples to apples, thru yr 3, Goff was 60.9% of the cap space ($19.0) that Bradford was ($31.3M). And this was 6 yrs LATER.
Talking % of cap and not dollars, thanks to the increasing cap (didn't happen in the first 3 years of Bradford's deal), Goff is taking up just 4.3% of the Rams cap this year. Year 3, Bradford was 12.9%, a full 3 times higher. That edge is massive.
Here is a look at all 2018 cap hits and % of cap for the 28 projected starting QBs currently in the NFL, (along with QB deal #).
