Oshima drew a dog, a hedgehog and an old man in Central Park in NY and asked passersby what they liked best.

Character had to be familiar and comfortable so you could feel affectionate toward it. Had connected eyes and blue skin, then added individuality with Sonic's pupils. Really wanted kids to be able to draw it.
Yasuhara rebelled against the complications by drawing his cute sketchy version internally
Why's he blue? Duh.
Oshima really wanted to show Sonic's "cool" with his stare. His attitude had to stand out.
I think a lot of us forget the environmentalist message of Sonic

That the logo was meant to be on a flight jacket makes so much damn sense.
Test ideas, knowing what Naka's tech gave them
