Students from multiple disciplines and years with varying levels of past interaction with Professor Mahmoud Hamad are disappointed and concerned by the lack of response from Drake University administration in regards to the publicized sexual misconduct allegations.
We have four specific demands for the administration to ensure the safety and success of all students. They are as follows below.
1. A statement from the University administration regarding Professor Mahmoud Hamad’s actions and his current and future relationship with Drake University.
a. Our students need to know that this University’s commitment to combat sexual misconduct is not solely performative and that action will be taken to ensure the safety and success of all its students.
2. Support and guidance for students whose academic plans have been disrupted by the absence of a qualified instructor. (Middle Eastern regional studies)
3. Resources for students whose safety and well-being have been compromised in result of their interactions with Professor Mahmoud Hamad.
a. Recognition of the increasing need for emotional support for students in the wake of these occurrences and the current limited availability of these resources through the Student Health Center.
b. An effort to hire another counselor who specializes in support for survivors of gendered violence and/or trauma.
4. Recurring mandatory sexual misconduct prevention trainings for faculty and staff using up-to-date and accurate resources.
a. Transparency of when, where, and how these trainings are provided.
b. Influenced by the Safe Space training model done by the Office of Equity and Inclusion.
We expect a public statement by April 16, 2018. If there is no statement, we will continue to directly address faculty and staff regarding our concerns. We will bring more attention to this problem through various channels and we request it is addressed as quickly as possible.
