1. My brief report after listening to the OIG Oversight hearing this morning to see if there were any relevant nuggets as pertains to the forthcoming report. There were a few *very* interesting comments and they came mostly toward the end of the hearing.
2. One of the most interesting parts of the hearing is when Trey Gowdy questions the IG. Gowdy asks about the interplay between the OIG and the Office of Professional Responsibility within the DOJ.
3. Horowitz notes that his office is the only one of the 73 Inspectors General that does not have the ability to investigate misconduct by all employees in their agency, specifically lawyers and or prosecutors when they engage in..
4. ..misconduct and ethical violations within the courtroom. He states they have been asking for this authority for 30 years. He expresses the desire to have independent oversight rather than having an organisation that is overseen by the depts. leadership. Conflict of interest.
5. I thought this was particularly interesting comment considering all of the malfeasance we have seen on behalf of lawyers and prosecutors recently. If you read between the lines, its seems Horowitz agrees and would like to be able to curtail that behavior by having oversight.
6. Even more interesting is (D) Rep. Gerry Connolly who immediately follows Gowdy. You can tell from Connolly's questions that he knows what is coming in the May report & is laying the groundwork for accusing the IG of partisanship upon the release of their upcoming report.
7. Among his questions, Connolly asks who performs oversight on the IG and then begins to list a litany of things where he feels that the IG has acted in a partisan manner. I knew, I guess we all knew that this was coming and Connolly confirms their strategy to combat the OIG R.
8. finally, it seems that several Congressmen might be hedging a bit on the May 8th hearing as relates to FISA gate. Some congressmen asked the IG to testify with regard to the Census in the May 8th hearing. If the report is as we hope, I doubt there will be any census questions.
