I'm still vexed by Buhari's comments on education. So I want to do a thread with some numbers to show how shallow his thinking on this matter is
So, companies in Nigeria, by law, pay 2% of their profits as an education tax. Now on a good day, this is a very good and stable source of funding for education that can do good stuff. But Nigeria has turned this on its head
The money goes into TETFUND. According to a NEITI audit 5 years ago, N366bn went into this fund between 2007 and 2011. This is money that supplements the FG's education budget
But who gets the money? This is where you see Nigerian nastiness in living colour. 50% of the money used to go to primary and secondary school but many years ago, higher education managed to corner ALL the money for itself. I repeat - ALL
FIRS also collects 4% as a fee. This is one reason why if ASUU go on strike for years and lecturers are dying on the streets, they will NEVER ever have my sympathy. All unions are selfish but ASUU are supremely selfish
Please note - As I wrote previously, almost 70% of FG's budget is also cornered by higher education. By the time money is spent on universities, millions of kids have either dropped out of the system or didnt even make it inside the system at all (10m) guardian.ng/features/nysc-…
So, from TETFUND, where does the money go? (After TETFUND staff have paid themselves fat salaries - check Nairaland you'll see 'yoots' discussing how it's one of the best govt jobs to get). A sample dailytrust.com.ng/recover-tetfun…
Another example - this time 2015 guardian.ng/features/cessp…
Last week one lecturer was threatening to renounce his citizenship over 'injustice'. But when they fight like this, you get snippets of the real gist. So in the newspaper reports you learn that lecturers collect N5m from TETFUND to do Masters on full pay punchng.com/ill-renounce-m…
Meanwhile, this same Buhari appointed the current INEC Chairman from his former post as head of TETFUND where he ate N850m only happenings.com.ng/new-inec-chair…
To summarise, the people who can make the loudest noise have managed to corner the chunk of the education budget. ASUU lecturers claim they're 'working' and should be paid but which work? By the time students get to them, damage from underfunding is irreversible
Meanwhile the govt that is too weak and only negotiates with terrorists, capitulates and never defends or protects kids who have no one to fight for them. Young people too fight for more university (and NYSC) funding not knowing they've been shortchanged from birth
Actually, maybe Buhari is right
