I got a little time, and my homie doesn't re: playing as other/writing campaigns and content that is not your experience in TTRPG's. We need to stop this circle of white people asking other white people about other folks. Why? Lemme tell you
First off, here's a post I did a while back after a convo arose on a a dear friend's FB page @oakthorne cypheroftyr.com/2017/11/12/on-…
Now after you read that, let me tell you why white folks asking other white folks about writing outside their experience is not ok. You don't know that culture, or the nuances of it. Hell you all don't want to listen to people from that culture half the time.
Doing this also winds up reinforcing stereotypes more often than not. No one is there to tell you X assumption is wrong, or Y trope is bad and it shouldn't get put into your setting, NPC or campaign.
You want to write an Indigenous character or setting and that's not your culture? Do some basic research then contact a sensitivity reader or diversity consultant. PAY THEM.
Otherwise you'll just join the many people who tried and failed. This applies to any group that is "other" to you. I hate the term but that's all I have in the moment. Yes, you can do research and the work but if you don't? It will show, we will notice.
Then we'll just get back on the wheel of I tried, why does everyone hate me, fine I won't try ever again, those [Marginalized group] don't appreciate my attempts to help them, etc. etc.
This is why TTRPG's need to be more inclusive. Too many POC feel shoved out, excluded. It's why I could count the number of POC I saw over four days on two hands. Why we don't go to conventions, or stores a lot.
Yes, I've tipped over to using POC to mean anyone not white but character limits. Just stop this cycle of white people asking other white people on how to write outside both your experiences.
