This week in 2009, the US repeatedly bombed the homes of Afghan villagers seeking refuge from the war, killing 140 civilians (including 93 children), wounding 25 & destroying an entire village. #GranaiMassacre
The strikes including repeated air strikes over the course of two hours, which used huge weapons (2000 lbs.) on villagers’ mud-brick houses. Villagers had gathered in homes of religious leaders, hoping to find protection from the violence.
The bombs were so powerful that people were ripped to shreds. Survivors said they collected only pieces of bodies. Many could not distinguish the dead. & were unable to find some relatives killed in the bombing. One elderly man lost 30 members of his family.
Villagers said no Taliban were in the village at the time of the attack. “It was like Judgment Day," Habibullah said, who witnessed the attacks, said. "Words cannot describe how terrible it was. Who can bear to see so many killed, from a two-day-old baby to a 70-year-old woman?"
Nine year-old Nazo saw two red flashes in the courtyard that kicked up dust seconds before the explosion. “I heard a loud explosion and the compound was burning and the roof fell in,” she said. Seven members of the family with her died, and four were wounded, her father said.
The US has refused to admit it killed such a large number of civilians in the incident. This despite investigations by the Afghan government and an independent human rights organization, which proved the massacre had occurred.
The US has video of the attack & said it would release it to “prove” it was justified, but never did. The video was leaked to Wikileaks by Chelsea Manning, but Wikileaks wasn't able to release it before it was deleted by a disgruntled ex-employee. pri.org/stories/2013-0…
