What do you love most in life? #LifesShort, so for #ChildrensHospiceWeek we asked children and young people with life-limiting conditions (and their amazing parents) about their very favourite things. This is what they told us... /1
Many love giggles and getting up to mischief
“My son Thomas is non-verbal but is always very happy. He’s known by everyone for his big smile! He giggles in bed in the dark!” /2
“Johnathon loves playing pranks – he's a very cheeky character" /3
Lots love listening to music, like Ava
“Music has the ability to get through when nothing else can. When she’s well it excites her...When she’s unwell, it calms and soothes her and takes her away to a safe place where the pain melts away.” /4

Animals are REALLY important
“The first time the carers took Carmela riding I walked round with them, listening to her laughing and squealing with joy and I just cried and cried, tears of happiness. You can’t put a price on that." /6
Many love just being with their friends, like Holly
“I love going to camp and being part of my girl Guides group. My friends in Guides have taken the time to learn how to communicate with me so I can be just like them. I love being one of the girls.” /7

1/Children & young people with autism and learning disabilities who could be living in the community with specialist support are languishing for years in Assessment & Treatment Units, some of them locked up 24/7 in isolation rooms, bec of severe financial pressure on Local Auths
2/ At the same time, private providers running these ATUs are raking in profits, being paid £452m per yr in what has become a market driven provision where autistic and LD people are little more than commodities
3/ This in spite of the fact that caring for them in the community would be far less expensive not to mention far better for the individuals concerned, their quality of life, their security and safety and their wellbeing

The researchers analysed data from:
📌 140,830 participants aged between 4-24
📌 in 36 national surveys in England, Scotland and Wales

📋 The surveys asked children and young people (and parents of children aged 4-12) whether they had a long standing mental health condition
📈 The authors found a 6x increase in how many children and young people in England reported having a long-standing mental health condition between 1995 - 2014

☝ This means almost 1 in 20 children and young people in England reported having a mental health condition in 2014

Government funded school guidance has been issued across Scotland, endorsed by Children's Commissioner, charities, LA's etc which discards the need for single sex spaces/sports
No Equality Impact Assessments were carried out, neither by the organisations who compiled the guidance nor the Local Authorities who have distributed it amongst their schools.
As a mother of daughters who are directly impacted by this I began asking questions. I shared @Transgendertrd school pack and I got blocked from LGBT Scotland, the authors of the guidance issued across Scotland
