If you say:

“Using torture is fine, because we’re fighting terrorists.”

“Killing civilians is acceptable, because we’re fighting terrorists.”

“Bombing hospitals is allowed, because we’re fighting terrorists.”

Then you’d probably make a pretty good terrorist.
If you're willing to do anything to win the war...

violate international law...

break your own country's laws...

suspend your own moral code...

then what "civilization" are you fighting for exactly?
I guess there are fundamentally 2 kinds of "fights" then. One is a fight for a nation, a religion, a political group or an ethnic group, regardless of ideals. And the other is a fight for a set of universal ideals, regardless of group identity.
Fighting for the latter is harder, because you not only have to fight for those ideals, you also have to live up to them.

A few people seem to have difficulty grasping the historical parallels between some modern democracies & Europe in the 1920s-40s, because they only recall what Hitler & other extremists were doing toward the end of that period. As if genocide appears out of thin air...
But Nazism didn’t start with Auschwitz. It started with people believing a lying hate-monger - becoming fanatical for him & accepting his dehumanizing certain groups. It strengthened when other political forces gave in or thought they could achieve their own aims through him.
The horror of all mass atrocity crimes begins with poisoned politics of hate and demagoguery. That’s where we are in some countries today. New horrific crimes are not inevitable, but we’re clearly a few steps down that road, so we all need to push back loudly. That means you too.

#Footbinding wasn't outlawed until the 1950s. The perfect lotus-blossom foot was 3inches long. It was done to girls at age 6. It kept women captive for centuries.
In the #footbinding process (it appears in my last novel, #OrdinaryMayhem) the girl's foot is bent backwards, so that her toes are underneath the sole of the foot.

It is then bound tightly to keep it in place.

The pain was described as excruciating and crippling.

On August 28, 1980, the three-car motorcade of John Gunther Dean, the American Ambassador to Lebanon, was attacked on the motorway by several assailants armed with automatic rifles as well as light anti-tank weapons or LAWs. The ambassador and his wife escaped unscathed.
This attack is in RAND's “terrorism” database. Entry states that “responsibility for attack was later claimed by the Front for the Liberation of Lebanon from Foreigners, a shadowy right-wing group.” Various media outlets at the time reported on FLLF taking credit for the attack.
