The push from unions like @afscmecouncil13 and @UFCWLocal1776KS to keep people with disabilities institutionalized in #PolkCenterStrong and #WhiteHaven is disappointing, but not new.

I wrote a little bit about it for @PostEverything. washingtonpost.com/outlook/2019/1…
For a more local, in depth disability rights analysis of the #PolkCenterStrong conflict, check out @notthreefifths and @jessicalbenham’s op-ed for @PghCurrent. pittsburghcurrent.com/polk-state-cen…
There is shockingly little written about the fact that organized labor has been one of the biggest barriers to deinstitutionalization. Sourcing this piece involved reading like 30 years of AFSCME policy briefs and newsletters. There wasn’t a book I could turn to.
I want to give @nicocoer, @aneeman, @MikeElk, and @sbagen special thanks for lending me some of their subject-matter expertise.
I’m stoked that this piece was edited by @EricMGarcia. Autistic journalist editing autistic journalist for a mainstream publication was a new and extremely awesome experience for me.
