27مارچ 1822میں اردو کےپہلےاخبار "جام جہاں نما"
کا اجراء پنڈت ہری ہردت نے کلکتہ (ھندوستان) سے کیا۔ اسکے ایڈیٹر منشی سدا سکھ لال تھے۔ یہ ایک ہفت روزہ اخبار تھا جس کا رسم الخط "نستعلیق" یعنی "Proto-Indo-Iranian" تھا۔

ٹیپو سلطان کی شہادت کے بعد انگریزوں نے ھندوستانی حالات اور مستقبل بھانپتے ھوئے تمام پریس اور فوجی اخبارات کی فائلوں کو ضبط کر لیا تھا بلکہ آگ لگا دی تھی۔
اس لیے جام جہاں نما پر بھی کنٹرول اور سنسرشپ کی ہدایت تھی لہذا اسی اخبارکی وجہ سے1823 میں برصغیرمیں پہلا
