Last night, a vandal at Moscow's Tretyakov Gallery used a metal pole to smash through the glass and damage Ilya Repin's famous painting of Ivan the Terrible killing his son in a fit of rage

The painting's history is incredible. Alexander III banned public displays for several months when it was first unveiled. It was also damaged in a knife attack in 1913. The gallery's keeper, Georgy Khruslov, threw himself under a train when he found out

The museum already undertook emergency work to remove glass from the painting and frame, and now they're collecting input from top restorers on how to proceed.

Unfortunately, there are plenty of people who take signals like this from government leaders and then act on them (and not only in Russia).

Here we go: the police gave TVCenter video of the suspect, now saying he was drunk. "I went to look at the painting. I wanted to leave, but then I dropped by the buffet and drank 100 grams of vodka. I don't drink vodka, and something came over me."

No one who's calling the new She-Ra's writing lazy, or the animation static, or the character designs uninspired, has watched the original series in the past two decades. I promise you.
Again, I say this as someone who is an old school fan and who has stayed connected with the original Filmation shows. They're great for what they are, but what they are... isn't great.
We talk about how they were toy commercials but I think it's more than that. It's not just that the shows wouldn't have existed without the toys, I don't think we would have connected with the shows without the toys. The toys sparked imagination, let us relate to the characters.

So @shannonandswift's appreciation of The Lost Boys sent me down a rabbit hole of revisiting pre-CGI genre films to look at how they built scope and scale from usually modest budgets. Ready to come with me on a deep dive? Let's go...
It starts, of course, with the writing. Being judicious with setpieces while using description & dialogue to suggest a big universe that fires the audience's imagination. Think of Princess Leia's offhand reference to "the Clone Wars." Hugeness suggested by one line of dialogue.
Similarly, Wrath of Khan used its modest budget incredibly well by focusing on its clash of wills between Kirk & Khan. You barely notice that almost the entire film takes place on one tiny set--the Enterprise bridge, redressed as the bridge of the Reliant.

For the last 24 hours I've been texting & calling with refugees in Libya. 500 are apparently stuck in a Tripoli prison w/o food & water after heavy fighting broke out two days ago. They say their guards ran away, leaving them alone.
These refugees are men, women & children. They tried to cross the Mediterranean earlier this year, but were found by Italian boats, who turned them over to the EU-backed Libyan coastguard, who put them in prison. The conditions were already terrible before the fighting started.
Oh the phone earlier I could hear children crying & what sounded like bombing in the distance. The refugees say everyone's incredibly frightened. "We hear machine guns, tanks, big bombs, last night from the roof it was all fire."

Time has come for the serious confrontation with #ISIS "soldiers of the Caliphate" in Quneitra (Jaish Khaled bin al Waleed) bordering the occupied Golan heights as the Syrian Army, Hezbollah & allies reached the territory occupied by the group as part of south #Syria liberation.
#Damascus soldiers & allies are aware of the necessity of this inevitable battle that is supposed to begin as soon as the preparation of attack from different fronts is completed. This can be achieved when more territories under Nusra and FSA are cleared.

90 cities & villages and 27 border positions are liberated in south #Syria in the provinces of Suweida and #Daraa.

Syrian Army is on the borders, once again, with #Israel and the occupied territory.

Israel T4 attack last night is an insignificant move.
