Last night, a vandal at Moscow's Tretyakov Gallery used a metal pole to smash through the glass and damage Ilya Repin's famous painting of Ivan the Terrible killing his son in a fit of rage

The painting's history is incredible. Alexander III banned public displays for several months when it was first unveiled. It was also damaged in a knife attack in 1913. The gallery's keeper, Georgy Khruslov, threw himself under a train when he found out

Surprise, surprise: The man detained "explained to police that he damaged the painting because of the inaccurate depiction of historical facts," Tass reports
.@Tretyakovgal statement says man burst through group of staff right before closing time. The painting was seriously damaged although "by happy coincidence the most valuable parts -- the depiction of the tsar & tsarevich's faces & hands -- weren't damaged"

The museum already undertook emergency work to remove glass from the painting and frame, and now they're collecting input from top restorers on how to proceed.

Ilya Repin was alive to repair the painting when it was last badly damaged, in 1913

Putin last year defending Ivan the Terrible (not that bad, look at all the other leaders back then!)

"Take the famous legend about how [in English, here] Ivan the Terrible, Ivan Grozny, killed his son. That's known yet, whether he killed his son or not"

Unfortunately, there are plenty of people who take signals like this from government leaders and then act on them (and not only in Russia).
State Duma Deputy Natalia Poklonskaya's infatuation with Nikolai II (and opposition to this movie) ended up getting a couple cars torched and theaters daring to show "Matilda" facing repeated arson threats

Here we go: the police gave TVCenter video of the suspect, now saying he was drunk. "I went to look at the painting. I wanted to leave, but then I dropped by the buffet and drank 100 grams of vodka. I don't drink vodka, and something came over me."

I'm not an art expert, but Repin has always been my favorite from Russia. Haunting, unforgettable images of people & events. You can browse his complete works here:

State TV interviewing art historian, apparently from his dacha, who agrees that no one really knows for sure whether Ivan the Terrible killed his son
Court delays hearing on whether to arrest suspect to May 29 but extends his detention by 72 hours. Apparently he didn't have his passport on him
After initial reports that he told police he attacked the painting because it was historically inaccurate, suspect now saying he doesn't remember anything, according to his lawyer

Lev Tolstoy on Repin's depiction of Ivan the Terrible killing his son, Ivan.
Repin himself, recalling his work on the painting:

"I painted in bursts, I suffered, I worried; again and again I fixed what I'd painted. I hid it away with painful disappointment in my powers, and I took it out again and resumed my attack. For whole minutes I was terrified."
