A consistent thing that happens when you fact-check Trump is that some of Trump’s defenders dismiss the lie by pointing to some underlying truth that Trump didn’t say and accusing you of ignoring it.
Trump says reporters made up a person who doesn’t exist. You note that the person exists. Defenders: “He’s saying the Times misquoted the person.”
Trump says Chicago homicide is at a record pace. You note that it’s down significantly from last year, isn’t at a record pace. Defenders: “He’s saying the number is still very bad. Do you even care about people dying?”
Trump says 30 times that the trade deficit with China is $500 billion when its $337 billion. You note that. Defenders: “And you think a $337 billion deficit is GOOD???”
The goalposts are constantly moving. As long as there’s some kernel of truthiness somewhere in his lie, some of his supporters are willing to not only find it but use it to attack. It is interesting!
I’m not making any mistake. I’m providing facts to people, challenging officials’ lies. That’s my job. A lot of people want the info, appreciate it. Some don’t. My job to isn’t to covert die-hards. I just find this phenomenon worth discussing.
