Thread Brexit: Where are we now? 1/ Things are clearer. U.K. red lines kept the same: no Court of Justice, no Single Market, no Customs Union, no Free Movement of Persons, no payment to EU budget. Get back control on laws, borders, budget. Brexit means Brexit!
2/ But UK is not third country as others of course! Closest partner in trade, economy, research, internal and external security, transports, health... We are ready to generously offer to EU unconditional continuation of close cooperation in all domains for the benefits of us all!
3/ Let is have agreement allowing continuation of no red tape on trade between us (equival custom union and single market incl services but of course not for movement of persons), continue cooperation aviation, EURATOM, all EU agencies and programs, arrest warrant, Galileo etc
4/ Well these are examples not exhaustive list... we are surprised by lack of understanding from Commission. That would be best of both worlds. We promise that as much as possible we will take into account the EU legislation, of course if the EU is ready to take account of ours!
5/ on this basis a total agreement is in view for European Council in June.
Viva Brexit! We leave EU but we promise we will stay in Europe!
We are nearly there now M. Barnier!

THREAD. -1) The so called « constitutional treaty » has not been renamed the Lisbon Treaty! While a number of their provisions are the same, their political and historic significance were totally different.
-2) The « Constitutional Treaty » would politically have meant a significant step towards more integration and maybe federalism, with its name, flag, motto, anthem and some of its substantive content.
-3) See my book analysing that treaty, published by Cambridge University Press: « The Constitution for Europe: A Legal Analysis », 2006, 292 pages.

I also agree. If U.K. asks an extension of art 50 to be ended on latest on 30 June 2019, no EP elections in U.K. at the end of May. However, European elections last week May 2019 necessary if extension beyond 1st July 2019.Decision EUCO 19 June 2018 establishing composition EP.
Decision 29 June agreed by Eur Parliament and European Council
“Beginning of the 2019-2024 parliamentary term” means 1st July 2019, the date when new EP may begin to take decisions, give opinions,etc. Starting with this date,EP should have British members,otherwise EU cannot adopt any act or decision involving EP even for a simple opinion

Interesting bits from the Prime Minister’s #Brexit letter …bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politi…. The absolute primacy of ending free movement as the driver of the Referendum result- perhaps the one Leave argument she personally buys..
But ending FOM for EU citizens also removes it from UK citizens. PM does not mention that.
Second the stress on the benefits of ending vast annual payments.. But she knows that direct savings will not be huge as we take over programmes (CAP, replacement structural funds), incur costs of setting up own agencies

Don’t know which Europeans Mr. Hannan is speaking to but I haven’t met anyone in Brussels or in EU capitals who is unhappy with the Commission approach & I’ve spoken to a lot of them. #Brexit
In addition, no-one in the #EU is threatening the UK (I wld challenge Hannan to point to one threat that has come from a leading EU politician or negotiator), nor are they stopping the UK from leaving. #Brexit
The EU have been clear from the start that there are many trade models available to the UK & the UK have ruled most of them out. If it feels like the UK has little room for manoeuvre it is because the government painted itself into a corner. #Brexit

a Leaver described Brexit as a Sky subscription-we can opt in or out of packages (sky sports/free movement of people)

But Brexit isn't like Sky, it's like Virgin Cable, you are in or out of TV/phone/ADSL

2) I'm a Virgin media user who had TV, Broadband & Landline phone (which I have never used)

I want a bespoke #Brexit Telly package of just TV & Broadband. But Virgin don't do one. I can have Telly on its own & Broadband on its own, but that's actually more expensive
3) it turns out that whether I like it or not the whole Virgin package makes more sense and is better value than the individual bits. And I can't really pick the bits I want without paying a lot more.

This is gonna be long, but I think it's worth it. A well-regarded twitter poster, let’s call him Giorgio, has recently publish a thread stating among other things as follows. “The pathways to stopping or delaying Brexit are blocked.
But once the mandate is discharged, the pathways to UK rejoining, or being in a close association agreement with EU, within the single market and customs union, will be open, with no obstacles.”
This approach annoys me for two reasons, one because Giorgio seems to be attempting to cajole Remainers to put all activity on hold until we actually leave the #EU.

1. The #Brexit question has always been one of what sort of relationship we want with the EU if not actual membership. Brexiters bleat "we just want trade" failing to note that regulatory harmonisation is central to free movement of goods.
2. The minimum condition of entry into the EU marketplace is compliance. Any third country can do that but without the ability to self-certify goods for circulation in the market they are subject to full third country controls at the borders.
3. Members of the single market avoid those customs controls by way of having the ability to self certify goods. This is why the single market is more pertinent to free movement of goods than the customs union.
