The Kenyan Education system does the exact opposite of what education is supposed to do: It disempowers instead of empowering, it is oppressive instead of being liberating. THREAD.

Public primary schools are defunded which means that parents who can afford to move their children to private schools in the hope that their children will have higher chances of success in exams which translates to hope of these children joining top national schools

Those who can't afford private schools have to make do and for a lot of Kenyans, this fates you to a certain outcome. One that will continuously limit opportunities, making it harder for you to succeed in the ways that success is measured in this country.

The system is designed to eliminate many, so a few can make it through. Those few are wealthy and privileged. Privilege here can mean geography, gender, ethnicity and connections (who you know.)

National secondary schools are built on those systems of elimination and alienation. Privilege is simply reinforced in national & other top schools.

These schools pump students that they MUST get As, be featured in the newspaper and earn yourself a place in a top university where you will undertake medicine, law or engineering, with a false promise that this will guarantee you a place among the 3%

What essentially happens in these schools is that the students are taught the ways of the system, encouraged to be part of it and so they come out not wanting to change it but with the superiority of having been in a national school.

While this is happening, those who didn't make it to top schools are told that it's because they didn't work hard enough or aren't clever enough. They are conditioned to believe that their 'failure' is their own personal fault and reflects on their own inadequacies.

A friend finished in public sec school wanted to pursue an arts based course. UON has them but you can't find them on the KUCPPS website, you can ONLY access them parallel. A public university privatising its courses making them inaccessible to many young Kenyans.

At University, the 'successful' students compete to have individual wins and gains. Young people have already been exposed to the idea that its a man eats man society, so winning is demanded at the expense of real progress for the society.

We are taught to kill each other to get to the top of the food chain yet a good education system should teach us to create an equitable society.
