1/ Last weekend, @EOS_io, the crypto network that investor @KyleSamani called “the first real competitor to Ethereum,” launched their mainnet. Right now, communities around the world are voting for who will produce the blocks. What follows is a curated primer on the project.
2/ First, the background. EOS is a project of Block. One led by @bytemaster7 and @BrendanBlumer among others. A good way to learn about the blockchain is to read the analysis/valuation on them written by @myles_snider at @multicoin multicoin.capital/2018/04/24/eos…
3/ And if you want to understand the technical and governance differences inherent in EOS' Delegate Proof of Stake consensus mechanism, try this ELI5 style overview by @stellabelle hackernoon.com/explain-delega…
4/ Now to be clear, EOS is a controversial company in the blockchain space. This piece by @twobitidiot explains the skepticism - especially around the perception of capitalization outweighing community - is about as dispassionate as you’re going to find. mailchi.mp/2f69201dffa8/r…
5/ There are many more both pro- and con- position pieces around EOS. I’ve flagged a few that are worth the time in the appendix. (Sorry, but if we can invent magic internet money, we can also give our Twitter essays appendices.)
6/ But back to the Mainnet launch. In this post, @bensig provided a primer in the messy, interesting, experimental governance process that was happening as we got into the weekend. medium.com/@bensig/unders…
7/ Below is a recap of the live EOS Public Chain Launch where Block Producers performed a final validation before opening the chain.
8/ Interestingly, for the chain be considered valid, 15% of the tokens outstanding must vote for a Block Producer. EOS is designed to have a continuously changing group of 21 Block Producers creating the blocks. cryptoglobe.com/latest/2018/06…
9/ The voting process has been a challenge. A few days later, only 9.2% of EOS has voted. While part of the issue is one of interface complexity around voting, @tek_fin argued that we’re also under estimating human apathy around governance.
10/ While the delay might be frustrating for the Block Producers (and at least the involved part of the EOS community), it does provide space to learn about the different communities competing for the role.
11/ One example, @SheOS is an all-female Block Producer candidate led by @crystalrose @emilyrbush & more that is dedicated to ensuring that the new scale and opportunity they believe EOS will bring to the blockchain is evenly distributed sheos.org
12/ Regardless of what one thinks about EOS, it’s hard not to be excited about the new mass scale experiment in distributed governance. Keep track of the voting tally at eosportal.io
APPENDIX/ A couple more pieces across the sentiment spectrum:

EOS: Don't Believe The Hype medium.com/@matteoleibowi…

EOS: Goddess of the Crypto Dawn by @Dan_Jeffries1 hackernoon.com/eos-goddess-of…
APPENDIX 2/ This (live) thread with @ricburton @TusharJain_ @myles_snider definitely belongs here. Passionate differences + a willingness to work hard to keep the debate civil and about the thing the debate is about = we're all better for it
