I grew up in Arleta. This was my home for my whole childhood. This is sickening. dailynews.com/arleta-woman-i…
This is really fucked up. This breaks down households and eroded communities.
*erodes.

When I lived in Arleta in the 90s, it wasn’t some safe haven, but I did have the extreme privilege of being part of a community that looked out for one another. The pillars of that community were immigrants from Guatemala.
In my home, our family didn’t really foster much in the way of community. My parents were in a decaying state of relationship, and that meant pushing out people and putting on a face for anyone outside the family.
It was all a farce, because their fights were audible down the block. Everyone knew my parents relationship was falling apart. My friends knew. Their parents knew. They just opened their doors to me (and others) and kept on doing community.
I have no idea what any of their “legal statuses” were. I do know that at some point in the 90s, INS raided a house across the street from mine and arrested a dozen or so people who were living in a 2bd ~1000sq ft home. I didn’t know why at the time, but the effect was chilling.
My friends and their families were not caught up in any part of that, thankfully. But it hurt, brought paranoia.

This man’s family is already immediately and materially impacted by his detention. ICE has no grounds to support deporting him. It’s homewrecking.
