The Trump administration has been separating children from their parents so that it can bring criminal cases that seldom seem to be more than symbolic.

The administration has said it's going to continue prosecuting these cases, but is looking for ways to avoid splitting families in the process. So far, it's given mixed messages about how that will work.

8 U.S.C. § 1326 makes it a felony to re-enter the U.S. after deportation regardless of whether you have a prior misdemeanor conviction.
