I see defenses of the five-paragraph essay which describe the template as "training wheels" for developing writers. I unpack this in "Why They Can't Write" arguing that training wheels are not a help in developing essential skills, but a hack to prevent academic disaster.
This is true of training wheels on bikes. Research has shown that training wheels actually prevent the development of the most important skill for bike riding...balance. The training wheels function as a guard against children cracking their heads when supervision isn't available
Those bike training wheels may be a necessity so children can get around on a bike without being in physical danger, but experts now recommend children learning on "balance bikes" where their feet touch the ground from a young age. When it's time for a pedal bike, they're ready.

The best thing a university to do to train students for jobs that don't yet exist is to help them learn the critical thinking skills which will help them understand that a claim like "most children will be doing jobs that don't yet exist" is un-evidenced B.S.
So here's the skill I want students to have, to be able to take a claim like "65% of the jobs children will have don't yet exist" trace the claim to its source and then judge the validity of the claim. Let's try it with this one.
The Guardian story cites a UK Universities report for the 65% of jobs factoid.

A quantifiable effect of the (still ongoing) Russian disinformation campaign is impossible to know. It's too complex a problem. We could barely quantify the effects a single vector ( like Twitter), let alone the hundreds through which this info traveled.
Just because we can't quantify it, doesn't mean it didn't have a big effect, however. There's many things we can't quantify that still have tremendous meaning and impact. The fetishizing of the quantifiable as the only truth knowable is as dangerous a problem as anything today.

This is why Haidt and Lukianoff are so dangerous. If you have mental health needs, it isn't because you're weak or were overcoddled. They have assumed causation without evidence. "Safetyism" is a conclusion they came up with first, then reverse-engineered the evidence.

My mental health needs may well correlated to the participation trophies I received (did I get any? Fuck if I know). But there's no reasonable suggestion of causation.

So as you probably know from my SUPER SUBTLE HINTS in my viral fighting in ballgowns thread, I'm a larper & a tabletop gamer. For each like this Tweet gets, I'll post a thought about the relationship between roleplaying games & writing and how gaming has shaped my creativity!
One of the biggest differences between running games & writing novels is that gaming is fundamentally collaborative. While in writing it sometimes feels like your characters have minds of their own, in gaming they LITERALLY DO.

You can learn SO MUCH from this.
A good game runner (GM) has to be willing to let the players run with their crazy ideas and weird priorities and take the plot in directions you never expected.

Learning to let my cherished plot ideas go and be flexible as a GM has been a HUGE help to me as a writer.

Son's professor told him that grades are "holistic". 🤣🤪🙄😳What does that even mean, holistic? Seen as a whole, not as in parts? What? Went on to say that those with, say, 85% right now will probably see that turn into an A, while 80% will likely go down. Huh? (see next tweet)
(2) I homeschooled my kids - son had never been to school until he went to tech school, then college. I didn't do grades. I required MASTERY. If they didn't know the material, they did not pass. Period. They had to know why they missed what they did, and if they couldn't (next)
(3) get at least 80% correct, they had to re-do all missed questions until they could hit the mark. The "grade" was: Did you learn it? Do you know it? Can you DO it? I encouraged personal best, setting goals, and WINNING. My daughter aced two sections of the SAT. (next)
