I'll make it simple, @chuckschumer: shut the Senate down. No unanimous consent, no nothing. A Supreme Court nomination cannot reach the floor in 2018.
We are far too close to the 2018 midterms for a nominee to be considered. In the past 50+ years, only one (Souter) has been submitted to the Senate this late in an even-numbered year.
Senate is at 50-49 with McCain's absence; it only takes one Republican to stop this, and @SenatorCollins and @lisamurkowski are not up this year. Nor is @SenJohnKennedy, who's been unafraid to stand up in Judiciary hearings. Retiring @SenBobCorker @JeffFlake could make a stand.
Plus, as @mattkbh, is is unprecedented to allow a President under criminal investigation to make a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court.
This, 100%. @SenatorCollins and @lisamurkowski can decide, this summer, whether their claims to being pro-choice are substantive or nominal. Roe absolutely hangs in the balance now.
And this tweet is absolutely correct: the fate of the Court, of women's rights, of so much may depend on Sen. McCain simply not resigning and continuing his valiant fight while the nomination remains open.
