I’m running for borough council in my community of Allendale, NJ. It’s a small town in northern Bergen County where Democrats haven’t won a local election since 1973. They started losing, kept losing, and eventually stopped trying.
I’m running for borough council in my community of Allendale, NJ. It’s a small town in northern Bergen County where Democrats haven’t won a local election since 1973. They started losing, kept losing, and eventually stopped trying.
For 30 years nobody made a serious attempt at running for local office here as a Democrat – until last year, when a brave political novice wrote herself in on the primary ballot, won the nomination & came within striking distance of an incumbent R running for re-election.
That paved the way for where I am now. I’m running for council along with @Burrite, a professor at Rutgers, & a Cuban-American attorney named Carolina Curbelo (a former Republican!) who is running for mayor.
Although we’re called a “Republican town,” Allendale’s electorate has been changing. Only 35% of the voters are Republican; 26% are Democrats, and 49% are unaffiliated with either party.
Every week, I go out to knock on doors. I visit Democrats, Republicans, and Independents. Believe it or not, I keep meeting Republicans who are sickened by Donald Trump and Independents who are looking to finally end one-party rule in Allendale.
I meet voters who get excited about our agenda – people who are tired of seeing services cut back by officials who refuse to engage with the public, seniors who want to feel included in the town, and families who want to see improvements that we can deliver if we win.
This race is *the* most competitive local election in one of the most competitive Congressional districts in the country right now. We are training local Dems in how to do phone banking, how to canvass, how to do the work of winning elections and build a party from the bottom up.
If we can win this race, we can win again next year, & my newly-trained team can take those skills to the county, state, and federal level not just to elect Democrats – but to elect Dems who will fearlessly stand with conviction for an agenda that will advance justice & equality.
I am optimistic about the future. Not because this fight will be easy, but because it’s needed now more than ever and I see no other option in this moment but to press on even harder to build a robust political coalition that can win the future. And that is exactly what Im doing.
