A few thoughts on virtue signalling. I think it may be useful to untangle "doing something to signal that you are virtuous" versus "having social motivations for doing the right thing".
The latter can be leveraged to achieve actual social change -- we are social beings, we are influenced by one another, and social pressure can be positive. The former is an empty or hypocritical gesture that is pacifying and comforting rather than a call to action.
But sometimes there is not a clear line between one and the other. Sometimes, a person says, does, projects all the right things...but still has some prejudices in their heart. that's actually okay. Nobody does a complete inside out change immediately. The tail can wag the dog.
Sometimes we change things, as a society, by making certain behaviors or words unacceptable, to the point that some people stop doing/saying those things before they come to realize why. It's okay if people learn that way. It's gradual. It's social. it's fine. It still helps.
