The speed with which American partisans have switched sides on "economic patriotism" - sometimes involving the exact same policy (eg solar panel protectionism) - would be breathtaking if it weren't so damn predictable and sad.
Someone should do an "economic patriotism" video supercut of FoxNews/MSNBC pundits in, say, 2011 and today. I'd bet a shiny nickel you could find the same people saying the exact opposite things abt the same Obama/Trump industrial policies
Seriously, I bet you could find Hannity screaming SOCIALISM abt Obama's subsidies & protectionism in 2010 now screaming PATRIOTISM abt the same Trump policies. And the reverse for, say, Maddow today (except FASCISM, obvs)
And, sure, Trump's protectionism is worse than Obama's for various (wonky) reasons. But it was still dumb industrial policy wrapped in the flag (and politically successful). Trump just turned it up to 11.

TL;DR: only ~11% of US consumption dollars are spent on imports (only ~2% from China); BUT abt HALF of these dollars go to US firms/workers & half of imports are inputs /1
More:
Fig 2: when Americans buy imports, the ones "made in CHINA" generate the most revenue (~56 cents for every dollar spent) for US firms/workers;
Fig 3: imports from NAFTA countries (esp Canada) are most often industrial inputs for US manufacturing /2
Also interesting: even for goods (which are more easily tradable) US consumers spend well under half of their dollars (42.4%) on imports.

Good thread on tariff incidence (though I'm not sure Trump gets this point at all). Also important: in the real world, a lot of things prevent a quick/easy shift in supply or change in import price - contracts, supply chains, consumer preferences, finite global supply, etc.
In Section 301 comments, for example, dozens of US firms noted that, bc of these factors, it'd take YEARS to switch import suppliers, even where adequate non-China supply exists. Others said that US demand outstripped non-China supplies & building new facilities wasn't realistic.
So there are a lot of practical impediments to shifting a tariff burden away from consumers, even where the textbooks say it should be easy.

I hate to say it...because it involves rehashing the last few elections...but it has to be said: The disconnect between rank-n-file righties and the conservative intellectual class didn't need to happen. It shouldn't have happened, really.
Since 1996, conservatives were advised by various righty big-wigs to support various candidates. Dole, Dubya, McCain, Romney, Jeb!/Rubio: All were approved (in various strengths of approval, to be fair) from most rightish writers/thinkers at the prestige publications/think tanks.

#Khashoggi Case Thread: I am going to ‘pin’ this post to use it as an ‘Info Thread’ on the #Khashoggi Case. I am in #Turkey. I’ve been following the case closely and with access to sources & experts here. This is a very ‘sensitive’ criminal case due to ‘Diplomatic Booby Traps’!!!
The Evidence Obtained Outside Cameras will not show any evidence of ‘tempering’ but other than license plates of dozens of diplomatic cars (Many with tinted windows-large trunks) with related time stamp, drivers Info, model/year: Nothing.
#Turkish Intel-Investigative Bodies also have the list of all Diplomatic & Private Saudi & “other significant’ Planes in #Turkey for the period of ‘interest.’ Many of the Target airports have their own security cameras & related evidence.

1) I’m amused to see @JonahNRO scrambling for higher ground amid the insane tide of nutjob conspiracism that has overtaken the Right in the age of Trump. Amused, because Goldberg had no small role in conjuring up that tide, and still does. Thread follows.
