/ Second installation of Long Reads Sunday. This week, crypto saw conversations about when the bear market will end; how we should think about on-chain governance, and, of course, NFTs. Thread below. 👇
/ Less a thread than an interesting statement was this notion from @cburniske that he can’t personally identify the force that will shift market sentiment:
/ This sentiment was echoed by @AriDavidPaul in his mid-year reflection on his 2018 prediction thread. The whole thing is a must read, but this question of where the next boom comes from stood out.
/ These bear market blues were the subject of a short post from @NeerajKA on @tokendaily’s increasingly (fire) blog. His recommendation: remind yourself that there is more than price in how healthy a market is. tokendaily.co/blog/on-bear-m…
/ Speaking of that, here’s something heartening: totally irrespective of the price, builders keep on buidling. I loved @mattgcondon’s recap of this NFT Hangout. Surfaces tons of important Qs, from collab potential with games to gas cost as an obstacle.
/ In general, NFT’s are a fascinating area of crypto development. @toddg777 is a must follow if you’re interested in the space, exemplified by this thread on what happens to NFT ‘ownership’ in the case of a hard fork?
/ But back to building. @TheCryptoconomy did a great recap of everything that’s happened in the last 30 days of Bitcoin.
/ The @build_on_btc conference also happened this week. @SeoulBitcoin captured all of day one with this monster thread including the presenters and video links of their panels.
/ Techcrunch and Ethereum both held events in Zug this week as well. There is lots of content but for those interested in the “how do we make this technology work at scale” type stuff, check out @VitalikButerin pres on gas price/transaction fee economics vitalik.ca/files/Transact…
/ Besides time to build, the other benefit of a bear market is time to thoughtfully contemplate big questions. I have a full thread on governance coming soon, but here are a few previews.
/ One short line in this piece just today from @fredwilson strikes me as a central point of the conversation: “the basis of competition may shift from functionality to values.” avc.com/2018/07/govern…
/ Of course, governance is more complicated than that. Luckily, we have a @nic__carter, who gave an essential overview of blockchain governance at #Zcon0 recently. Video: and slides: docdroid.net/ddz6VzP/overvi…
/ Personally, I think the most interesting convos about governance are exactly that: conversations. You can’t pay for the sort of learning that comes from watching threads like this back and forth between @paul_btc and @robustus on on-chain governance
/ Finally, a few more must read essays. @tonysheng broke down crypto into “incrementalists” and “anarchists” about how far different philosophical view points want to take decentralization and resistance to authority in practice. tonysheng.com/incremental-vs…
/ @alegw wrote this incredibly thoughtful post methodology for auditing and evaluating the user experience of Dapps - a still woefully under-developed area medium.com/design-for-cry…
/ Not buying an emerging conventional wisdom about the relationship between store of value, usage and velocity, @QWQiao dug into some actual numbers to present a different perspective around complimentary network effects: medium.com/@QwQiao/the-fa…
/ Finally, @QWQiao also instigated what is turning into one of the most interesting conversations of the week - What important truth in crypto do very few people agree with you on?
/ What other conversations or essays happened this week that we should all be paying attention to?
Appendix/ Part of why I focus more on Twitter threads in LRS is that I am virtually assured that @yanroux & @stefanobernardi are going to thoughtfully annotate the great essays and this week is no exception. 3-4 Valuation/Velocity follow ups here + more! tokeneconomy.co/56-time-to-unp…
