Arizona’s monopoly utility, APS, has been aggressively fighting against a renewable energy ballot initiative. One of the monopoly’s talking points has been that they *love* renewables - just not this ballot initiative. But is it true? 🤨 A thread... 1/8
For answers, ignore APS’ PR efforts - they have no obligation to be truthful with customers. Instead, see how they talk to investors. A presentation today was revealing. 👀 2/8 seekingalpha.com/article/418637…
This slide shows APS’ capital investments through 2020. The grey bars represent renewables investment. They’re barely visible! 🔬 The black bars showing new gas build, and the orange showing spending to prolong a coal plant instead of retiring it, aren’t as hard to find. 🏭 3/8
This slide updates investors on APS' Four Corners coal plant. APS will earn a profit by spending customers’ money to install pollution controls on it, instead of retiring it. A tiny footnote mentions that the unpopular rate increase allowing all this is under appeal. Shhh 🤫 4/8
APS is surprisingly behind the times! They tell investors the executive director of the ACC is Ted Vogt, but he was fired last week, ostensibly due to a conflict of interest because his wife was working on APS' behalf to fight the clean energy initiative. 🤷‍♂️ 5/8
Here, APS refers to the ACC’s refusal to “acknowledge” the company’ long-term plan this year. The ACC said it was too over-reliant on gas. Never fear, APS tells investors: that decision is toothless! 🦷 Since APS generally treats the ACC like its plaything, that makes sense. 6/8
This slide shows how APS’ most recent rate increase, which went into effect last August, decimated rooftop solar growth in Arizona. That’s a result of APS asking for, and getting, a decision from the ACC that placed fees on solar customers. 🌥️🌥️🌥️ 7/8
Next time you see APS CEO Don Brandt say that “We oppose this measure precisely because we believe in a clean energy future” as he did in a recent op-ed, have a look at what he's telling shareholders instead. It’s much more revealing. 🤨 azcentral.com/story/opinion/… 8/8
