8. Provide culturally appropriate support and services - Indigenous peoples require different types of support and services during evacuations due to cultural differences.
Many First Nations have a relatively young population compared to the general population, meaning there are more children and parents that require support and care during evacuations. Activities help entertain children and provide parents down-time.
Many participants said they experienced cultural shock in the host communities. Having familiar faces in leadership and support positions during the evacuations helps reduce this.
Participants said support and services for Elders should be prioritized.
And it's always nice when the mayor of a host community throws a BBQ for evacuees!
It was hard to get information for many evacuees, as their reserves were small, and most media was focused on larger communities that were also evacuated. This made some evacuees feel like no one cared.
