As a @UNC alumnus, let me say once again that Silent Sam isn't worth a penny to preserve. It's long last time to tear it down.
@UNC There's no mistaking Silent Sam's origins in the Jim Crow era campaign to promote white supremacy.
While its origins were deeply racist, for most modern students the statue represents a lame "joke" about student sexual activity. (The statue will fire his rifle when a virgin walks past, campus tours used to note, but he's been silent for decades. Yuk yuk.)
That's what we're spending a third of a million to protect, @UNC? A racist monument turned into a stupid dad joke?
