Yes, we spy on the Russians. Yes, they spy on us.
Yes, the Russians hunt spies. Yes, we hunt theirs.

And it's probably best not to get all that indignant about the fact that the Russians are trying to mess with our domestic politics. This is how international competition works, after all.
But we can also grant that it's worthwhile to hunt Russian spies (whether they be witches or not), and to examine the vector of vulnerability through which Russia has attacked the US political system.
And that, of course, involves tracing Russian involvement, Russian methods, and especially the extent to which the Russian government has cooperated with other actors in its pursuit of disruption.
And so yes, even if we grant that there's an element of great game to it all, it's still worth our while to have Mueller ask about the connections that the Russians have with NGOs like Wikileaks, and the connections they've built with specific Americans.
Because good lord, the Russians certainly ask these kinds of questions. Whether someone has "colluded" with American intelligence or American NGOs is a relevant question in Russian politics.
The problem that Senator Paul has appears to be that Mueller is investigating people in Paul's own party.
And that's simply not enough to declare the investigation a "witch hunt."
