The Immaculate Conception Cathedral, Puducherry.

It stands on the site of the great Vedapuri Iswaran Temple, which was demolished by the French East India Company in 1748.

This is how Christianity was introduced into India: by brute force.
The events leading to the Vedapuri Iswaran Temple's demolition were recorded by a meticulous chronicler of the period, Ananda Rangam Pillai.

The temple was later rebuilt at a different location in 1788. It is administered by the "Department of Hindu religious institutions and Wakf" of the Government of Puducherry.

The church built by the French occupiers still stands at the temple's original site.
